Viceroy Single Phase Motor Needed
I'm new to this turning business. Bought a Viceroy some while ago. Fitted a single phase motor with a long spindle to take the pulley. This motor was sat under my bench for a long time. Anyway, have been suscessfully using the lathe for about two years, but yesterday motor went off in cloud of smoke!
On stripping the motor it has a warped shaft which must have been why someone dumped it on me in the first place.
Anyway, does anyone know of a supplier for a suitable motor?
Or perhaps mods to enable a shorter shaft motor to be fitted.
The motor must be reversible via wiring of course.
Cheers
Pete

Hi
I really don't think I can provide a solution but here goes.
I've just purchased a new 3-phase motor for my Viceroy because I plan on doing a variable sped drive conversion. I will have an original single phase motor available for sale.
The bad news is that I live on the other side of the planet, and I don't expect to complete the conversion until the end of the year. The cost of shipping would exceed the value of the motor.
The good news is that you should be able to find a suitable motor either new or used on your side of the planet.

Single Phase Motor.
Thanks Dazz,, I've bought a new motor of the same type as the one that went bang. Have just fitted it and it seems O.K. I'll find out in due course whether this was a wise move.

Single Phase Motor
Hi Paul, I bought a single phase motor with a long shaft from Massey Coldbeck Ltd., Tel. 0161 789 8867. Part No.HQF564HLCBA151/R.
It needs the foot from the three phase motor welding to the body so that it can fit on the motor carrier.
You will also have to adjust the wiring from the switch so that you have a pair of wires with a single phase that stay the same orientation regardless of the direction, these connect to the run winding without a capacitor. You also need a pair of wires that the live and neutral change places when switched from one direction to the other. These connect to the start winding with a series capacitor that comes already mounted on the motor.
The start winding is disconnected when the motor reaches speed by a centrifugal switch built into the motor.
I hope this is right cos mine hasn't gone bang yet! You will need to check this info yourself as I'm no expert on motors.
Cheers

I am new to this site having just bought a Viceroy TDS/1/1/GB/L lathe, c. 1976, with a three-phase motor fitted.
I am now looking for a 1.5hp, 4-pole (1,500 rpm), reversible, Capacitor start, Capacitor run motor with the correct shaft size (I haven't measured it yet).
Was the above motor OK ? I see this was posted last May so you have probably had some experience of it by now.
Are there any other suitable motors out there that don't require modification ?
I'm new to this game, but hopefully learning fast

Thanks in advance.
Bob.
