my new lathe an old viceroy

I am new & this is my first post.

I live in Manchester UK, I love motorbikes,
I was a millwright, Crane Eng, Pipefitter & Welder. Now 62 years old & a bad back.

Now the good stuff, I have got an old lathe, a Denford Viceroy Mk 2 T.D.S.1/1. serial No 28506
with 2off 3 jaw chucks, 1 off 4 jaw chuck, 4 face plates, full complement of change gears,
3 Kingston Aloris wedge quick change tool posts & other tools.

It is in a less than new condition, the back gear selector lever is missing & the cross
travel nut also missing, it has now become a project, but for £300 it is not a lot of money.

I hope to do some posts, for you to see the progress over the next 6 months.
Any info will be gratefully received

The viceroy lathe arrived today, some photo of the lathe.
Now I have had a good look at it, it is not that bad.

Nice buy Jeff, £300 is a great price given all the bits you got with it.

Seems to me that making a back gear lever would be a great first job for the lathe...

I agree with Pete thats a good price for the lathe and bits & Bobs.

These guys sometimes have viceroys in for breaking but I`m not sure what they`ve got a the moment.

Thanks for the info, I have sent out 10 or so emails looking for parts,
G & M tools is one of them, but the ones that have replied have not
got any parts in that I am looking for.

Still looking for a Thread Dial Indicator & Back Gear Selector Lever. ?????????????

I have ordered some tool holders for the Aloris tool post AXA No 2 XL
They will take 5/8” tool.

Got them from the USA, 4 off for £60, In the UK would be £80.

I am looking for a Digital Phase converter unit, for the 900w 1.2 hp
3 PHs motor.

Several of the manufacturers I have never heard of & I would be
Grateful for any info, if anyone has one or used one at work let
Me know.
IMO, TECO, OPTIDRIVE, MITSUBISHI, HYUNDAI-ELECTRIC.

The chuck came off ok, no problem & I used my S shaped spanners
For the first time in 10 years on the motor, but it would not have
Come off with out them.

Hi Jeff

There was a chap on this forum that was making some TDI`s for the viceroy but I cant seem to find any threads relating to that topic. I think he lived Warrington Area and I had a extra gear wheel for my TDI off him - his work looked really good.
Maybes omebody else can jump in with the members name - in the mean time I will keep searching.

I believe he has also made some custom gear sizes for thread cutting.

He may be able to help with the back gear lever?

i don't know how to get hold of Mike Molyneux, sorry.
Regarding an Inverter, I have a TECO model from Drives direct. Seems to work OK.
You must have a motor that can be connected star though.
I wouldn't be to hung up on the design of the backgear handle, if you can make one just now, you might be able to get a Proper one in the future.
I have attached a couple of Pics of the one on my Lathe, which is an older model than yours. It is held on by a grubscrew and has a detent arrangement to keep it in a selected gear.

Sorry for not getting back to you, thanks for the info will make one if I cannot find one, but would like
an original if possible.

Does anyone know the year of manufacture, the serial No is 28506 & there is a 86 marked on the gearbox.

I have removed the motor 3 Ph 900w 1.2 Hp, tested out OK.

Strip off the top of the lathe, cleaned out the gibs & slides,
full of sawdust & a resin of some sort, it must be from the wood ????????,
the parts look v/good under the crap, cleaning up very nice.

I will do more as I get the time & put on some photos of the parts that have been take off & cleaned.

Drives direct at Nottingham supply a lot of inverters and I believe they are quite Good to deal.

Although you may not want the motor package.

Hi paul
I looked at Drives Direct but for a IP65 it would cost over £400 & i
think it was made in China, & only IP20.

The WEG is 2.2 Kw, & includes Vector control, soft start, IP66,
speed control 0/400 Hz & a lot more, made in Brazil. RRP £543 + VAT
I got it from Inverter Drives Supermarket for £263 + VAT

Ringing round for a price i rang Transwave, Peter Moss was the there,
he was great, full of info, was open & honest, if is price
was lower, i would have got one from him, great guy.

I just thought I would comment because I think you may have a few misconceptions.
Firstly you don't need a 2HP motor to drive a viceroy, unless you are going to do very heavy work.
1 HP (746 watts) is fine.
Even if the motor is a 2.2Kw motor you can drive it with a 1HP Inverter.
It will work fine but will reach a current/power limit if you overload it.
You don't need an IP65 or 66 Inverter unless you intend to hose out your workshop.
The one I have is IP20, but I made a little enclosure out of Plywood for it to live in,
you could us a proper enclosure if you wanted. It keeps the dust/metal fragments out.

Also stay away from old fashioned phase converters,
a modern Inverter gives you speed control and the ability to reverse as well.

Thanks yes i no, but i will get a bigger lathe at some point & i will have my VFD.

It is going outside in a garage it will be damp & I do a lot of welding & grinding in the garage.
dust/metal fragments & damp are the killers of VFD.
2 or 3 have stated that a IP65 would be the best way to go, to fit a box & filter to a IP20 would cost
More than buying a IP65, this is a IP66 for a very good price.

A lot of the IP20 in that price range are from China, ok, but not the best. This is a mid-range VFD

A lot of the info came from Peter Moss from Transwave, who provided some good advice in a unbiased
Way, He did say that a 1Hp or 1.5Hp would do & he had IP20 at that price, but IP65 are hard to find at a
low price. I did not get the VFD from him, is price was too expensive, over £150 more.

I had not heard of WEG previously & needed someone who had. So the post.

Hopefully I have a VFD for the next 10 years or so.

I am part way through replacing a 1 phase motor with a VFD/3phase motor. This has included a new motor mount and poly-vee pulley arrangement.

I will program the VFD presently, how long did you give the motor to slow down & stop & run up,
did you fit a brake to the VFD.

What size motor did you fit.

Did you first fit a DC motor to the lathe

I have a 900w motor 3ph, have you had any prolemes runing at 1800 rpm, my motor is old maybe 15-25 years ???
