PCS Feed Gearbox Assembly Procedure

Post by Taylon » Fri 07 Jun , 2013 23:46 pm

Hello to you all,

Thought that after dismantling such a gearbox, a record of how to go about assembling one might be useful. So here is the way I went about the task. The following photos illustrate each significant step in the assembly.

Stage 1

Insert the selector gear for the feed screw/lead screw and the course fine feed selector.

Stage 2

Attach the selector control knobs to the selector shafts and secure.

Stage 3

Insert and fix the feed screw bearing sleeve and add one part of the clutch gear. To enable the clutch gear to be fitted the cir-clip at the back of the gear has to slid past its groove and back to the bearing sleeve shoulder. Then the split ring at the front of the clutch gear can be fitted as in the photo!

Stage 4

Fit the remaining parts for the feed screw clutch, but leave the taper pin loose so it can be removed when the feed screw shaft is fitted later after the gearbox has been fitted to the lathe bed. You may need a bar of the same diameter to the end of the feed screw shaft to help keep the clutch aligned until fitment of the feed screw itself. The feed screw shaft just slides in if everything is correctly lined up and the taper pin is then finally fitted making sure you get the taper pin the right way round and correctly aligned with the feed screw taper pin hole. The o-ring seal on the feed screw shaft may also need replacing before fitting.

Stage 5

Fit the lay shaft with the selector pins & gears for the feed and lead screw noting the position of the spacers and ensuring the 'C' clips are fully located onto the shaft. Also make sure you get the lead screw/feed screw gear the correct way round and insert the shaft with the key-ways from the rear of the gearbox. See photo.

Stage 6

Fit the back gear drive shaft and gears, see photo. Lubricate parts appropriately after final fitment.

That completes the initial feed gearbox assembly.

Hope the info is helpful should any one have the need to undertake this task. Had to do this in my case as I found the feed screw clutch had seized.

Kindest regards, John R.

Hello Paul,

Please note that the above procedure is not exhaustive, and there may be steps and issues to be aware of that have been omitted for clarity. Otherwise, thank you for your comments and if you should need any help please PM me and I'll see what can be done...
