Can anybody tell me the correct thread size for my lathe? is it 1/2" x 10TPI right or left hand?

On your metric lathe, it's 1/2" diameter x 2.5mm pitch left hand modified square section thread. As far as I can tell this like a square thread but with a 10 degree flank angle.
Drawings here: EDIT - wrong drawing. That one is for a 5mm pitch, you want a 2.5mm pitch nut.
ML100-512D is the drawing you need, it's about here somewhere. Here's a gif of the nut.

How lucky are we to have these great folks at Denford who are willing to put themselves out for no gain to help by scanning drawings for our machines? I know a lot of it is gone now in the premises move but all the same I think we should be very grateful for what we get!

I made mine from delrin, following this method:

It was tight at the ends of travel at first, but now it works like a charm and has no back-lash.
