Re: New guy, old lathe, advice please!

I have now had time to warm up the dormant grey matter and having gone into memory mode I now remember that the carriage lock screw has a tapered end which pushes a locking pin up against the bottom of the bedway. Mine was missing the pin when I got it and had to make one. IIRC I made one from a ...

Re: New guy, old lathe, advice please!

Hi Nigel. Welcome to the forum.

I will try and answer your questions as no one else has yet come foward.

Take great care when running at higher chuck speeds than original lathe was designed for. All chucks have a max running speed and you do not want to exeed that or even come close to it unless ...

Re: Help with powerfeed

I am sorry but unable to be specific as to the cause of your lathes problem, but most of the Viceroy range I believe have a shear pin in th lead screw
drive and I suspect that is causing your problem. I think the lower lever on your machine is a possibly for leadscrew foward neutral and reverse.
If ...

Re: TDS 1/1 Tooling size

I think you would do well to search for posts on ' youtube ' there are plenty of videos on setting up a four jaw independant chuck, and also lots of very informative videos on all manner of turning operations.
As the saying goes, ' a picture tells a thousand words ' a video will tell tens of ...

Re: New 280VS owner

Hello, and welcome.
The gearbox and apron are both similar to the TDS 1 LS, there are drawings of these somewhere on the site.
From memory, I think the spindle has a No 4 morse taper, In my opinion you would do better to use a D1-3 collet adaptor.
Not sure about the dragging leadscrew at the moment ...

Re: Viceroy TDS 1/1GBL Coolant pump drive belt

I thought all the TDS1 coolant pumps were made by Hoover ( of the carpet cleaner ) and used a Hoover drive belt. I ccan't remember if it was a Hoover Junior or Senior belt, and as AndyB says they were round belts.
I suspect your lathe has possibly been modified.

Re: Phase Converter Help For Viceroy TDS 1/1 GBL

Don't know much about the various inverters available, but when you ask about a 240 to 3 phase converter I assume you mean a VFD ( variable frequency device ) to run a 3 phase motor from 240v, if so, it is likely your current motor will not be suitable, they need a dual voltage motor.

I stand to be ...

Re: Viceroy Advice wanted

Hello Steve.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

My TDS 1 LS suffered a similar fate when being delivered to me. Clumsy idiot sat it on the back of a Transit truck and didn't strap it down. fell over and bent the apron handwheel, and broke the crosslide handwheel. Also broke the 127 tooth leadscrew ...

Re: What make 3 jaw chuk do you have on your tds-1 metal lat

David, yes I have already been down that road, but they dont recognise the numbers from my chuck, and even if they did, the prices for a single set of jaws for a similar size chuck from their present range is more than half the cost of a new Pratt Burnerd chuck, and that is before the extortionate ...

What make 3 jaw chuk do you have on your tds-1 metal lathe ?

Hello all.
I have a TDS - 1 LS fitted with a Cushman 3 jaw chuck approx 5.5 inches in dia, and the little circular emblem on the face ( like all Pratt chucks have ) that reads Cushman Chucks, Hove.
Well Hove is next to Brighton down in sunny Sussex, quite near to me, and I can find no reference to ...

Re: Half nut adjustment - how is it done?

I am sure my 280 has no adjustment for the halfnuts, and can only think yours is not assembled correctly.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Good news...
Wish I had a friend who threw away scraps of useable materials, I would make camp next to his scrap bin.

Re: Warped cross-slide on TDS1

Pete. Nearly forgot to list the gears as promised. Been mesmerised watching the old Viceroy automatically cut screw threads for the first time this morning.

Anyway here is a list of all the gears I have...

Re: Warped cross-slide on TDS1

I will check in the morning and list what I have.
Some I am sure are original Viceroy gears, but others I think are not, they are painted red but gear forms match the viceroy gears and bores are the same size.

Re: Warped cross-slide on TDS1

Do you know which sizes of change gears you require Pete, and I will check what I have. When I purchased my lathe it didn't have any, but I found someone selling a load of gears, so I brought the lot.

Re: Warped cross-slide on TDS1

Nice job. Out of interest, do you know the age of the TDS 1, the crosslide on mine looks to be thicker than yours, and the compound slide pivot mount is recessed into it.
I wonder if Denfords reaised there was a weakness in the crosslide and beefed it up on later models.

I am in the process of ...

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

I am not sure, but maybe someone can confirm, a lot of the parts on the 280 are the same as was used on the old TDS lathes.
It is possible that the apron gears are interchangable with the TDS 1 GB, if so it widens your scope in searching for a gear.

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Just in case you get to refitting the apron, I found it was near impossible to hold the worm gear whilst also trying to locate the apron, so I used the shank of a suitable size drill to loosely hold gear while sliding assembly back onto shafts. Found it worked quite well.
