Asbestos orac?

Post by dorro » Sat 07 Jul , 2012 14:13 pm

Hi all,

I hope someone can put my mind at rest,

I pulled my orac apart yesterday for a refurb and as i removed the brass support fot the cross slide ballscrew there was a white powdery substance that seem to have come from two redundant screw holes in the apron, it has a gritty feel and i am just concerned that it may be an asbestos putty used as filler, i hope i am mistaken but you never know.

if anyone has seen this material then please let me know...also to anyone who has an orac please be aware of this possible hazzard.

best regards

Ian

There's no reason for it to be asbestos, and from your description it doesn't sound like it is. Even if it were, any risk to your health is pretty negligible. Please, stop worrying.

I can't vouch for what went on more than 10 years ago, but castings are sometimes sanded, filled and spray-painted using standard car repair items. My guess is it was fibreglass filler
