Micromill running slow

Post by Kholden » Thu 23 Mar , 2006 16:44 pm

Customer question: Since we switched to new software (windows not dos) it can take up to 45 minutes to cut a billet. Is this normal or do I have something wrong.

I can give you a few ideas that you can check.

Once you have set-up your billet and offsets you will click on the auto tab. When there ensure that you are turning the “turbo” mode on. It is the button in the bottom right, and will appear depressed when activated.

The next thing that you can do to speed up the process is to change the editor to file mode. This is done by clicking on the file menu, selecting source, and then selecting the “File” option. You will not be able to see the CNC code any longer, but will allow the system to run fast because the screen will not have to scroll through the text while running.

Also, ensure that you do not have any of the simulation (2D or 3D) running at the same time.

The final thing is to ensure that the feed rate and spindle speed knobs on the front of the machine are turned up the proper levels. You will need to watch the control panel in the bottom right status to ensure that the overrides have not reduced the actual operating speeds.

The windows and Dos software should not make a difference to the time it takes to cut a part.

Set the jog rate in VR milling to 6" / Min then jog the x axis 6" and time it.

Provided the slide moves the correct distance in the correct time the machine is set up correctly.

If your program is taking too long to manufacture the program probably has very slow feedrates.

If you are trying to cut a 3D part then the cycle time would be normal but could be improved by upgrading the control card and software to VR Milling 5.
