TRIAC VMC no communication with the controller

Post by MotoJack » Tue 15 Apr , 2025 18:44 pm

I apologize for my level of English, I use a translator.

Hello to all enthusiasts of milling machines and other Denford machines :D My name is Jacek and I recently fulfilled my dream of owning my own CNC milling machine. I chose the Triac VMC because it will fit into my garage, its body is very "rigid" and it has the same functions to a large industrial milling machine (tool storage, closed chamber, coolant). Unfortunately, the only one I found in my country was inoperable :-( I bought it with the idea that if I can't get it to work I will convert it to Mach3 control. However, I would be very happy if I could get it to run on the original control. I love how machines are fully operational and well cared for.

So here we go :-D

Machine: TRIAC VM,C EO4597, MAY1995, ELECTRICS NO.OC00104785, SOFTWARE VER. 2.86 The machine is powered correctly and responds to pressing the red STOP button (a relay click can be heard. The voltage of the "MINT" backup battery is 1.23V (I don't know if this is important)

Problem: The computer does not connect "MINT"

Description: When I turn on the machine, DOS is loaded and there is a wait for "Initialising MINT3.28" (see pictures). If I disconnect the COM cable and restart the machine, the message on the screen is the same. When the machine is turned on, the MINT control board on the 7-segnrmt display shows "8" followed by "L" with a pulsating dot (the display is broken, it does not display the middle and bottom segments, see photos)

What I did: I cleaned all the contacts in the computer and the MINT board. I checked the COM cable, there is a transition on each PIN. I corrected the soldering of the COM plug on the MINT board.

I would appreciate your help
Greetings

I think this may be a similar board to the Triac PC I have and there is a NiMH battery near the comms area which is prone to leak when old and the electrolyte may be effecting the signals in the area. Cleaning the area carefully with distilled or deionised water may help remove any deposits, allow to dry and see if that improves things. Don't force the drying just place somewhere warm like an airing cupboard till dry. I've also seen on the BB that the battery isn't used so could be removed. When handling the board do take appropriate static precautions.

Yes the battery can be romoved.

It does look like the board is the issue. It looks to be displaying a "i" from the picture which is not correct.
