Viceroy TDS 1.1 G.B.L. Intro and Tailsock Question

Post by Druidan » Tue 15 May , 2012 0:38 am

Hello, I am new to this site and I am very impressed with it.

I purchased my Lathe about 6 months ago.

Model TDS 1.1 G.B.L.

I am very happy with it. I am still suprised by the fantastic finish it can achive. The powered crossfeed is a great feature, something my grandads myford didnt have!

I have put some work into this machine as it was the usual college cast off.
The positive lock for the saddle was not working, found out the saddle clamp was missing.
Found one in the scanned plans on this site. Thankyou Denford Admin.

The main issue was the fact it was 3 phase but converted the box to single, with forward and reverse buttons.

It was never running on 3 phase but once converted to single and I had it running the vibes were just horrific! It vibed the floor and the resonance from the cabinet was just awfull. There was no play in motor mount shaft at the back, the belts were tensioned so the modern single phase motor was sold (as even running on the floor it wasn't that smooth) and a good old brook crompton 1Hp single phase motor was installed. Still vibed really bad and the machine was just not nice to use.
This was cured by adding studded rubber feet between the motor and mount plate. Also fitting a slightly shorter belt to acount for rubber mounts. I also replaced the bearings on the intermediate shaft while it was out.
Its now smooth as silk and very quite, a joy to use now.

Something I am struggling with is the fact there is no positive lock on the tailstock, It has a silver handle and the insert with a taper on it.
But it just spins round and round. I have found a cross section for it on Plan ML100/700
However there is no detail or dimensions to fabricate whatever is missing. Any help with this would be appriciated. Before I wear out another live centre :D

I guess drawings in the region SP140 is what you need, but I couldn't find any.
All I did find was some references in the parts lists which I've just added to the top of this forum.

I was very impressed by your Viceroy, all very smart.
One thing I would suggest would be a bit of rubber above the motor foot, as well as below.
That might smooth it up even more.
I took the barrel lock off my viceroy and took some pictures. The dimensions are approximate BTW.
If you can get the Tailstock barrel out completely,
(Eg by undoing the three Allen screws that retain the chrome plated end plate),
Then the lock assemby should be easy to remove.
I didn't attempt to measure the tapers on the bronze bits, but I think they aren't critical.
If you look at the pictures you will see that my lock must have been turning at some point in the past as well.
Cheers,
Les.T.
PS Thread might be 5/16 UNC as well.
PSS Looks like brass not bronze as well.
