As an experiment we tried to turn a ball on the end of a bar.
We have tool 1 set up with a right hand turning tool, tool 3 is a parting off/grooving tool and tool 5 is left hand tool.
The problem is when we output the file quick turn selects the parting off tool to do the roughing that the left hand tool should do. The parting off tool is not designed for sideways movement and as a result the tip is knocked out of the tool.
We are confident the tools are defined correctly within quickturn it just seems to select the wrong tool for the job.
I have attached the .fnl file but it will not allow me to attach the .lcm file.
Any help would be appreciated.

From what I understand you should turn off finishing for the grooving tool...
Under menu Options>Machine Tooling - click RH Groove/Parting tool and Edit.

Yeah i did this and it does finish with the left hand tool however it still roughs with the parting tool, which includes roughing around an arc which means sideways movement which pings the tip out. Surely it should do all the left hand processes roughing and finishing with the cutting tool?

Hi. It is normal for the parting tool to rough the rear of the part and make the finishig pass down the roughed steps. The tip is designed to take sideways cuts provided the depth of cut is not too great.
What material are you using?
When fitting the insert into the holder it has to be tapped firmly into place with a nylon mallet (or put a block of MDF on the tip and hammer the tip into place using the MDF to protect the insert).
The feeds speeds and depth of cut are set in Quickturn and should be fine provided the material is corret. Steel must be free cutting EN1A and Aluminium 2011T3 free chipping. If other grades are used then a new material with suitable feeds and speeds needs to be created.
I would also check the toolholder for damage. If the insert was not secure when you first took a cut the holder may be slightly bent as it will have hit the material without an insert in place.
Check the top and bottom of the wedge are inline.
Also when you design the ball shape the shaft at the back has to support the part when roughing and finishing. If the diameter is too small this will cause Vibration and could cause the tip to be knocked out. Can you attach the Program to the forum so we can check it out. If it seems OK we can try cutting it here.

By default in both VR Turning and Quick Turn tool 1 is the RH tool, tool 3 is the LH tool, tool 5 is threading and tool 7 is parting. This is how they would be fitted if you had a turret.
The tool definitions in the program are not correct as both the right hand and left hand tool have a 65 deree angle. In your program the LH tool says its 34 degree.
Can you check what version of Quick Turn you have? Version 1.12 was released in march 2012. If you have an older version download the current version and install it.

new version download has seemed to cure it, i ran the same file and now there is no sideways movement. we also corrected the tip angle ours are 55 degrees, dont know where 34 came from
