The tailstock was an option on the Nova Turn.

They are however custom fitted at the factory as they have to be scraped to align them with the spindle.

A second hand unit would have to be set so the spindle of the tailstock to the chuck.

Thanks for writing back.

I wanted one because since I don't know enough to use the machine in a full cnc controlled mode, so I have been using it manually, and thought it would be great for drilling and I thought I could maybe get a boring head for it and complete boring with it. If I did ever get one, could I not align it with the set over screw that would probably be with it, or do you mean scraped height wise ?

Thanks.

The tailstock is not used for machining as the guard has to be closed to run the spindle it is purely a steady.

The base of the spindle head is scraped during production so a test bar runs true out of the spindle. This is done so that turning is parallel.

The tailstock needs to be lined up with the spindle center line otherwise as you move the quill in and out it could be moving up and down or side to side.

There is no adjustment for lifting or lowering or changing the angle on the tailstock. It is done by grinding the base then scraping the base to throw the Quill to be parallel. If you put a clock on the cross slide it should not move as you traverse along the quill

If you then fit a bar from the chuck to the tailstock this should also be parallel along its length

Thanks for the more detailed explanation.

So it is basically for holding a centre and nothing else then.

I was wondering how longer parts were made and just thought it was only designed to make short parts which is o.k. for me, but since I haven't found an easy way to use the machine yet, I will have to stick with drilling a hole outside of the lathe to accept a boring bar and do this by hand.

With QuickTurn 2D Design the CNC program will call up the toolchanges sor drilling boring and internal threading.

If you have a turret the indexing will be automatic, if a manual toolpost you will be prompted to change tools manually. You would just need multiple toolholders and the offsets set correctly.

Thanks for the info, but I was only using quickturn in demo mode so have given up trying to use it, so have been using it manually, hence the tailstock question.
I had to make a part that required a large hole in it, but it seems there is no collet for the large drills that came with it, so in order to use the boring bars that came with it, I needed to make a hole big enough to accept it. If I had been able to use a tailstock it would have been easy, but I had to centre drill it in the lathe, take it out and drill it in a bench drill, then put it back in the lathe (concentricity not important for this item), and then bore it out.

have you thought of a set of blacksmiths drills, they go up to good size and have a 3/8" or 1/2" shaft.

Thanks for the idea. I'll have a look for them in the internet.
