DOS Emulator for old software

Hi All...

I stumbled upon this today...

https://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

It emulates DOS running on an old x86 processor but in a windows environment (XP/2000 etc). It seems to include such things as emulating a low CPU and old serial port hardware (I'm still investigating).

I don't have any old Denford hardware to hand to test on but I've been runing some of the offline stuff on it OK. Thought some of you might like to give it a try linking to machines and let us know.

In particular it might help in talking to the old Triac PNC3 machines, or linking to Starturns etc....

Andy...

It runs FAPT Ladder perfect - this is why I came across it!

Didn't FAPT work from the XP cmd prompt then ?

Nah - kept locking up at startup - plus it needs ANSI.SYS to run

This emulator does look pretty good - the old DOS screen drivers access EGA registers direct & all works perferct. I'd be pretty confident about the serial port stuff (not that your intereset - moved on to bigger and better stuff I guess! :D )

Ah yes - I remember those screens full of garbage when you forgot to load ansi.sys !

Its still interesting to know about - especially of someone like mydadsdenfordmad can test it out for us and confirm you can run any kind of old software successfully on XP/2000/Vista

Hopefully, running through this DOS should sort 50% of the problems people are having with the old stuff :D
