The correct machine was selected but where do you change the steps per mm?

Its in the menu setup > parameters, but you should never need to change anything in parameters - it's all set on the CD for a standard machine. The only time you may need to change anything is if your machine was a one off, or had an option fitted like auto-toolchanger
If the current version of v2 milling has "support me" under the help menu, can you click it, copy and paste the information on here.
I'll be able to compare it with current versions to see what differences could have caused the axes to buzz.

Also I sure would like the get the Micromill with the SmartStep /3 controller to connect to the DOS software!

I don't know much about the older software, but there have been similar issues in the past:
