Rear tool post

Hi all
I was thinking of making a rear tool post for my viceroy gb
I have seen on other posts that they used to do a cross slide with 2 tee slots milled in as an extra.
However there are drawings available on the forum to Mill your own.
My problem is the cross slide as a cast aluminium cover which protects the xslide leadscrew.
When I removed this cover to expose the screw there was not enough land on either side to take a tee slot.
Any info would be much appreciayed
