Setting Viceroy Lathe Bed Levelling Adjustment Bolts

Post by Taylon » Mon 13 May , 2013 6:32 am

Hello there,

Does anyone know what the correct procedure is to set the lathe Bed adjustment bolts prior to attaching the lathe bed to the base?

The information I have at the moment is the these bolts are set at the factory but mine have been removed & lost prior to owning this lathe, but have managed to obtain replacements and now need to how to correctly attach the lathe bed to the base.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kindest regards, John R.

Hello to you all,

The user manual for this lathe has been downloaded and from one of the assembly drawings there is a cross section of a holding/leveling bolt sub assembly. This sub assembly shows the holding stud, a Dowty spat washer and the adjustment bolt that the stud is allowed to rotate. The outer bolt is threaded and screws into the lathe base. Hence by turning these bolts, level adjustment can be made.

The way I intent to proceed is to measure the ht. of the Dowty spat washer and screw the leveling bolts up to touch the inside bottom the Dowty spat washer when this washer is laid flat on the lathe base for all 4 adjustment bolts. Then place the lathe bed onto the spat washers and insert the hold studs and then use a Engineers Level to level the bed.

Any comments on this procedure that would be helpful or to point out potential errors would be appreciated.

Kindest regards, John R.

Hi
Place the level on the carriage and traverse the carriage along the length of the bed.
I found that the top of the Vees could not be relied upon for levelling.

Hello there,

Thank you Dazz for your helpful comments and I have taken note. The lathe base is now fully renovated and painted. FootMaster leveling casters have been fitted so the base can easily be & accurately leveled in the 1st place

Footmaster casters have a rotary caster with a leveling foot within the assembly. Search for Footmaster on the internet should you need more details.

Kindest regards, John R.
