The Drill Sharpening machine (DSM) was one of several designs that Denford acquired or badged - others including the 'Royal' shaper from Realm Engineering of Croydon, Surrey, and the 'Horizon' milling machine from AEW Engineering in Norfolk.

The design apparently came from Engineering Developments (Rhyl) Ltd, but I can find nothing about this company.

The DSM had a major redesign in 1978 when most threads were changed from Whitworth or BA sizes to metric, the motor was encased and had a different mounting mechanism, and the label was changed from a discrete 'Viceroy' badge on the motor to a much larger plate on the main bed casting.

Its design differed from most cutter grinders; instead of the tool being swung across the grinding wheel, the wheel head pivoted and drive was transmitted via a toothed belt.
