Viceroy 280 vs 3 phase with phase converter ?

Viceroy 280 vs 3 phase with phase converter ?
I have aquired a Viceroy 280 vs 3 phase lathe. I would like to know if I can run the machine with a phase converter. The converter I have is a 3 hp unit ,a few years old but in good working order. I am a bit wary because of the variable speed unit sitting on top of the lathe is probably low voltage and I don't want to damage it.The serial No. of my lathe is. 2688im dated 1979.

No Problem
These machines run fine off a converter - as long as it is 415V output, not 240V.
From the description "variable speed unit sitting on top of the lathe", I'm guessing it is the later model of 280VS with electric variable speed control (joystick on the control panel) as opposed to the earlier version with a manual control using a handwheel on the front LHS of the cabinet.
If it's the same as mine (with electric VS), there is a transformer mounted at the back of the headstock (415V in, 24V & 10.5V out) which feeds the contactors (24V), and the speed display circuit board (10.5V).
The main motor and coolant pump motors can be rewired in the terminal box for 240V.
However, the variable speed changer motor needs 415V to give it sufficient power to move the expanding pullies to their highest speed, even though it has a rating plate stating 240V. It cannot be rewired.
Finally, the thermal overload cutouts on the main and coolant motors are only rated for the currents @ 415V.
The serial number quoted looks a bit strange - are you sure its not 26881m? ('m' for metric)
I would be interested to see a few pictures of the machine and ID plate to confirm its spec - there were so many small variations in the 280VS machines, and more keep appearing!

I'm trying to run a Viceroy 280vs off a Clarke PC60 converter and the thermal cut out trips after around three minutes run time.
The 280VS is the type with the joy stick.
The converter is rated at 400/415v and 5.5hp. I'm using the 2.5hp setting but higher settings make no difference.
Everything works on the machine during it's three minute run, including the speed changer motor operated by the joy stick, but the speed read out just gives a display of 0000.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I think I've solved this problem. I had the converter set at 2.5hp when I only needed 1.5.
Seems to be working ok now.
I still have no readout. Would this be a faulty sensor in the head stock?
