Viceroy tds 1/1 lead screw and feed screw problem

Post by logiedurno » Mon 05 Aug , 2024 14:44 pm

My recently acquired viceroy TDS 1/1 has an issue with engaging drive to both the lead and feed screw shafts. Neither are turning although the external side gears are working fine when the tumbler gears are engaged. The gear selector lever doesn’t feel right - it doesn’t want to positively engage to the left or right - could it be an internal gearbox issue? I’ve never been inside the gearbox and wouldn’t have a clue how to deal with that . The screw drive and shaft drive are both free to turn by hand - shear pin on the lead screw is fine,

I've had issues selecting gears etc when the shaft don't turn - usually its not fully engaged in gear.

What I do is with machine OFF,
Engage neutal (N) on the vertical sliding quadrant.
Select gear required on the rotary selector (1-5) - I normally rotate the chuck by hand to ensure its gone in OK.
Select gear number on the vertical quadrant - it MUST be the same number as the gear you have previously selected.

Top levers are selected when lathe running.

If this is how you are operating it sorry for repeating what you know !
