Alan's Viceroy TDS1/1 lathe
Hi all, this is my lathe, I am learning as I go along, I have found that I do not fully understand how to do things. This may be the same for many others, how to lubricate everything and where it is?, how to engage the leadscrew and backgear?. I am going to post pics as I go along, hoping for advice along the way. My first posts were drawings of the Viceroy. If I misspell or things do not look right, this is because I have poor sight, so bear with me.
These are the oiling points and grease points I have found. Please let me know if I have missed any, many thanks Alan.
2 points at end of leadscrew and backgear
1 on top of tailstock
1 on counter
1 oil filer on saddle
2 points on cross slide handles
1 point on back of saddle
2 points on saddle
1 point on big handle on saddle
1 grease point at side of chuck
1 grease point under chuck
2 points on top of casing over headstock
1 grease point inside gearwheel cover

Re: Alan's Viceroy TDS1/1 lathe
Sorry about any confusion guys, I am slowly getting used to posting on site. when I uploaded photos could not get in order, so put on in reverse order to show the right sequence. Hope this works OK. Alan.

I think there should be an oil filler point somewhere on the gearbox casing, at least there is on the slightly bigger Synchro with a similar looking gearbox. Its probably got a hex head and is near the top of the right hand end of the gearbox, with a similar one near the bottom for draining the oil. I think there should be a round viewing 'window' as well. Although there is a lubrication point on top of the cross slide, for oiling the feedscrew, which you have found, Denford don't seem to have done the same for the topslide feedscrew, so from time to time, wind the topslide back as far as possible, then peer underneath it and squirt some oil on the exposed feedscrew. It doesn't need doing very often as the topslide doesn't get used as far and as often as the cross slide.
ISO 32 hydraulic oil is pretty much the universal machine tool oil these days and should do for all your needs including slideways. From time to time I give the changewheels under the end cover a quick spray with an aerosol can of motorcycle chain grease, it doesn't spin off and cause a mess.

Re: Alan's Viceroy TDS1/1 lathe
Thanks Richard, I have drained the gearbox oil and replaced with 90/140 synthetic gear oil, using a printer ink syringe, slow job. I have been using bike chain spray oil on gearwheels and agree much better. I have been watching videos by John from Doubleboost (YouTube) which have been very helpful. I keep the bed clean with WD40 then use the spray oil. I also lubricated the leadscrew/backgear and speed selector levers. I wish their was a Haynes type manual for everything, this would make life easier. Especially being a novice, I have also oiled under the cross-slide, put a mark on so as not to run the screw out, thanks again cheers Alan.

90/140 is probably quite a bit heavier than it needs to be, but won't do any harm. The chain spray oil isn't really a slideway oil, it won't do any harm in the short term, but you'd be better using something like Mobil Vactra 2 slideway oil, or the ISO 32 hydraulic oil. To be honest, some people get pretty worked up about 'what is the correct oil as recommended by my lathes maker 30, 40, 50 60 years ago?' but modern oils are all pretty good, certainly way better than half a century ago. One philosophy which has a lot going for it, is 'any oil is better than no oil at all' i even used to use chain saw oil on one old lathe with a badly worn bed.Alan wrote:Thanks Richard, I have drained the gearbox oil and replaced with 90/140 synthetic gear oil, using a printer ink syringe, slow job. Re: Alan's Viceroy TDS1/1 lathe
Thanks Steve and Richard, I have a copy of the manual, which has some info in it, I have copied the lubrication list in larger print to keep near lathe. Because I am new to lathes, with limited knowledge find that info needs to be simple and with diagrams, photos etc. Richard I will get some ISO 32 oil, the Mobil Vactra is more expensive, but is it worth the additional cost. I have added another post which shows the fitting I think you mean, thanks again, Alan.
