Hello new guy here

Just got an Educator TDS 1 serial no 1205 no clue as to age but would think its quite old.
Im just working on the best way to power it swap the motor for a 240v or get an inverter or similar.
I may yet strip it down repaint ect not sure at the moment

Can anybody tell me what the chuck spindle size and thread is ?

Hi Steve,

Have a look at Lathes.co.uk for Info on your lathe.
Look for Denford.
The nose is threaded 1.5" x 8 t.p.i .
To power your lathe a small invertor is fine, thats what I have.
"Drives direct " do them. They cost about 100.00 pounds, but look around you might get one cheap.
Or you can get a 240V motor. An Invertor has the advantage of giving speed control though.

I don't claim to be an inverter expert, but thats a 440V motor the OP has, not a dual voltage 240/440, so the normal type of inverter, inputting 240v single phase and outputting 240v three phase, won't work on it. However, the www.lathes site has a section on electrical matters and apparently there are now special inverters which will do 240v in 440v out.

Richard is quite right.
There's an explanation here:

If you have a look inside the motor terminal box and find three seperate windings terminated
as per the diagrams, you are made. If not you will need either a special inverter, a new motor,
or to find and lead out three wires from the star point.(probably a specialist job).
The motor will run, by the way, as it is but will be very low powered.

I don't have any change gears for this lathe iv looked at a lot of posts seems to be common ish for them to be missing also found some drawings with specs for gears if enough folks were interested would it not be possiable to approach an engineers to have a load made?

A question about VFD do they have to match motor exactly (ie 1hp motor 1hp VFD) or can you run a smaller motor on a larger rated VFD (ie 2hp VHD 1hp motor)?
I realize it wont work the other way round (small VFD big motor)

As far as I know,
You can run a smaller motor from a larger VFD, (and you could possibly overload the motor).
i.e a 1 HP motor fed from a 2 HP VFD is still a 1 HP motor.
You can run a larger motor from a smaller VFD, (within limits), but you may run into the current limit of the VFD.

If you want gears, there are often ones on ebay. Failing this, look on a site called latheparts, its a guy called John Ward, he makes lots of replacement parts for older machines including change gears, and his prices are very reasonable.
Make sure you are looking at the right drawings, some of them are 14DP, some 16DP and some 18DP, you need to know which ones your machine uses.

Hi Guys

Have manage to wiggle lathe in to work shop and then found out how low it was so made some feet for it

Out of 4" channel spun some wooden extension bits with some old conveyer belt glued on the bottom mounter on m16x100m bolts

For now have bought a 240v 1/2 hp motor which is not up to the job but it was only £12 I shall be keeping a look out for a suitable replacement.

now this is up running I have small bench top lathe to sell if anybody is interested or knows somebody who wants one
