Saving Programs on a PC

Post by the_mechanic » Sat 24 Nov , 2007 20:49 pm

I own an old Orac cnc Lathe (1984) and am trying to save the programs on a PC, however I do not have the necessary sofware.

Can anyone please post the required software?

Hi,

I do not know the answer but as the IBM PC was released in 81 I do not think that there will be PC software that will do this.

I think you will have to use a tape drive.

I am sure someone will now prove me wrong.

I *think* the old Orac serial interface was deisgned to work with the old punched tape units.

That means that what it squirts out when it trasnmits is exactly what it expects to see squirted back in when it receives.

There are plenty of serial comms programs out there that will do just this. I only know (and still use) old DOS ones like XTalk and ProComm but a goolge should help you.

Hi,

You can upload and download the orac programs to and from your PC using standard RS232 comms software. The tricky bit with the Orac is that the serial cable is not like the usual type used for serial communication. Most cables used for data transmission to CNC machines are in the Null modem configuration. From what I can remember about the Orac I used to have is that cable was wired like a cable used for a modem with some modifications.

To solve your problems you can get the ORAC DOS software for creating Orac programs on you PC and downloading and uploading to and from the Orac from the Denford Website at

https://website.denford.ltd.uk/support/9 ... s-software

The file is called orac.zip. Download it and unzip it. This is an editor and comms program to do exactly what you want. It runs under DOS so you may need to set up a computer in DOS mode.

On the Denford website there is also a wiring diagram for the RS232 cable you will need. This can be found at.

https://www.denford.ltd.uk/index.php?opt ... &Itemid=52

The file is called cable diagrams.zip. Download this file and unzip it. In it you will find a wiring diagram for the Orac cable.

If you need any more help then Email me on frsdirect@blueyonder.co.uk

Regards,
Bob

The Orac DOS software is certainly worth a try, but I noticed your Orac was dated 1984. The DOS software was deisgned to work with Oracs from 1985 onwards.

From what I rememeber, the pre-'85 Oracs didn't have any G codes in their page definitions, where as the post-85 machines did. If your machine includes G codes on the NC pages then it should work !

Fingers crossed....
