2001 Microrouter X-axis problem

Microrouter Oct. 2001
VR Milling v2

We are having problems with the X-axis on the Microrouter. When the machine is jogged the X-axis moves very smoothly, but when running a file the X-axis stutters and moves very roughly, like it is jammed or stalling. The machine has always worked smoothly, this is a recent problem.

We have checked that the X-axis carriages are square/parallel, the belt is snug, the pulleys are tight on the lead screw shafts, the machine is clean and we only use spray dry silicone for lube.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem.
Thanks

Has anyone loosend the X axis screw nuts? It could be these are filled up with dust but if these are loosened then you must move the axis to the end of travel so they float to find the screw centre line before you retighten them

Where in the axis travel does the juddering apear?

What type of program are you running?

What feedrate is the juddering at?

Because the axis runs smoothly when jogged, I'd bet that the problem is not mechanical.
Is this a new type of program you are running ?
If the machine has an RS232 link, its possible that the move buffer cannot be sustained (ie, kept topped up) at the set feedrate.
Does the machine run smoothly at slower feeds ?
