3D milling

Post by rjk2 » Thu 13 Oct , 2011 18:35 pm

I am in a middle school environment.
I have a Micromill 2000NS (USB interface) w/VR Milling ver. 2.3xx.
I have simulation software that outputs .STL files of car shapes.

I would like to mill balsa wood blanks into the car shapes produced by the simulator.
Is this doable with my setup as it stands?
Do I need additional software such as MasterCam to post the .STL file to the mill?
If so, is there an inexpensive (i.e free- or share-ware) option?
Are there any pitfalls I should anticipate (speed, etc)?

Thnx

Hardware/Software: Go to User Control Panel > Profile
Enter as much information about your CNC hardware and software as you can - it makes it easier for everyone to know what you're talking about then.

Hi,
You need a 3D CAM solution like our own QuickCAM Pro s/w to create toolpaths over the .STL models.
The machine might struggle to cut 3D at any speed due to lower feedrates and lower spindle speeds (compared to say an MRC40 router) but will get there eventually.

There may be free 3D CAM systems around - I'd contact your local Denford agent who'll certainly be able to help.
