Hi
Im teaching A BTEC unit to 6th form for the first time its unit 18 "CNC machining".
The programming side of things is no problem but there is a couple of terms in the specification that im not sure what they mean.

Firstly
"Explain binary notation when used in the application of a part program"

Im not sure what they mean here surely they dont mean going back to binary code on punched tapes?

also
"Evaluate a CAM software package for ease of use, speed of operation and text variation"

What do they mean by the term "Text variation"?

dont know if any of you teach this BTEC unit but I would be greatfull for any suggestions.

It certainly sounds like a hangover from some 1970's CNC (NC) sylabus - The only time you may need to use binary on a modern CNC is when setting parameter bits (eg, Fanuc controls)

Text variation

I'm as confused as you are

If I were evaluating a CAM system, the most important things would be:

• The availability of different machining strategies,
  
  The ability to simulate the tool path and show the finished part,
  
  The ability to produce code for a number of CNC machines - maybe thats what they mean by Text Variation ? - the varied text output produced by the CAM post-processor to suit different CNC controls
