Pen Blank problems - taper alignment align error

Post by Kholden » Thu 30 Mar , 2006 18:54 pm

Description of problem:

We have used Dentford turning program to develop a simple program to cut wooden pen blanks that are .625 inches in diameter to start with and 4.125 inches long. We are using superblanks from Penn State. The part is mounted on a mandrel between centers on the lathe.

The cut is made the entire distance and will need to finish with the wood being .375 inches in diameter. Every time we cut the sample the lathe will always cut a taper towards the head stock. We have tried multiply times to re-write the program but still continue to get the same problems.

We have used Cam Lathe Designer program as well to create the same part but this will always kick up an error code when trying to use this process to cut the wooden blanks.

Below is the program we wrote to machine the pen parts and to see if we had the process correct. We understand that it is not the finish size. Again this is just a start.

Hardware/Software: Go to User Control Panel > Profile
Enter as much information about your CNC hardware and software as you can - it makes it easier for everyone to know what you're talking about then.

Its sounds like the blanks are not being held in line .

The centres of both ends holding the blanks must be in line, otherwise you will get tapered cutting.
You should hold a part that you know is not tapered - maybe some quality 1" bar, and run a clock (dial test indictor) along the top and side of the piece and check for run-out. Adjust the tailstock up/down in/out until the clock shows little or no deviation, then tighten everything up !
