I am trying to make a cable TRIAC to IBM PC RS232 but I need explanation of what is meant by 8 core screen and what is the screen Pin 5 (9 way D) to 7 (25 way D).
Is the screen the ground wire in a shielded cable?

The RS232 cable wiring diagram shows pin out of pins 2 and 3 going from the 9pin connector to pins 3 and 2 of the 25 pin connector. Pin 5 on the 9 pin connector is shown looping around pins 2 and 3. I downloaded the ZIP file with the pin out diagram, but I do not understand what pin 5 (five) is supposed to do. I looks like it is connected to pins 2 and 3.

Steve, Thank you for getting back to to. The cable is a home made cable that has worked in the past. Also in the past we had to set the port numbers and baud rate at 19200. PC has been re-imaged and the Denford software had to be installed. I logged into the PC (local machine) as admin and installed...

I found the answer to the RS232 error problem.
The PC I was using had ROLAND software on it and the ROLAND software took control of the COM port and did not let VR Milling software access the COM port.
Removing the ROLAND software solved the problem.

RS-232 error when using new Lenovo desktop running XP Pro connected to Denford Triton milling machine. The VR Milling runs OK but unable to connect thru RS-232 cable on PC. Denford repair rep moved the RS-232 cable to his laptop and had no problem connecting and using the Triton machine. Cable and T...
