I could be wrong (it has been known!) but my memory from when I was cutting gears for my Denford Synchro, is that they were 18 DP (or might have been 16DP), but certainly not modular.

Umm, the metric and imperial set ups use different quadrants and different gears. It isn't as easy as just swapping a few gears.

My own opinion is don't cut a hatch in the top. Denford made the box headstock for rigidity, so don't alter it, unless you are happy with a lathe that might not perform as well as its makers intended.

The headstock arrangement and spindle lock drawing I've got for the TDS series lathes, ML100/100A, appears to show the sheet metal guard as ML100/125.

Are you talking about the chuck guard, which hinges down over the chuck, or the splash back, the sheet metal item which fits along the back of the tray, behind the bed?
