Re: Another Viceroy 280 in glasgow
Sold: Price was 552 pounds in total.(if my Maths is right) That seems pretty good assuming there isn't much wrong with it. Does the £552 include the premium etc?. Also, I suppose, depends on how much kit there was with it in the way of chucks, faceplate, steadies, apart from the one chuck shown in ...

Denford 280 Synchro lathe
Just to be absolutely certain , before I start cutting gears for a metric/imperial translation set, for my 280 Synchro, c 1980, are these gears 16DP, 20PA? That's what I understood them to be, but they seem to mesh very well with some 16DP gears off my Raglan Little John, which are known to be 14.5P...

Re: My new viceroy lathe
Thanks for the reply! I think i might have to get in and have a look at the gear box. must be something wrong in there as it doesn't seem to work on some settings. I think i'll go and annoy my mate (again!) about what i should be using on it etc. Before you try taking off the chuck, I think there i...

Re: Denford Vicerory TDS1 PCS in a sorry state _ Rebuild?
Hi I'd try reconnecting the belt with it 'off' the top pulley, therefore slack, then feed it over the edge of the pulley with one hand while pulling the chuck round with the other. This should wind the belt back onto the pulley. Failing that, you will have to slacken the adjusters. There are some Vi...

Re: Denford Synchro speeds
Mine is similar. I wondered about it then decided it wasn't worth worrying about. You'll rarely want to use top speed and then not for long because of the noise. That's what I suspected. I'm still curious to know why the machines as built differed so much in respect of speeds to that which Denford ...

Denford Synchro speeds
Out of curiousity, I checked the speed ranges on my Synchro (the one with the 12 speeds controlled by a lever on the headstock, not the electric control version). Lowest I can get is 70rpm, highest is 1550, by fiddling with the settings of the variable speed pulleys. Closest I can get otherwise in o...

Is there? I looked under 'Denford' and 'Denford Lathe' but couldn't find anything except someone breaking an Orac.LesT wrote:I see someone is breaking a Viceroy on Ebay, might help someone who is stuck for a particular part.

Denford 280 Synchro lathe
According to the manual I have, I should grease the headstock bearings every 6 months, and the diagram points to greasers for the front spindle bearings and the layshaft bearings. I have found these greasers. There is no mention of a greaser for the rear spindle bearing, and anyway I can't find a gr...

Re: Viceroy TDS Idler gears Wanted urgently
Have you tried John Ward at Latheparts? I'm sure he'd do them and his charges are pretty reasonable.Taylon wrote:Hello to you all,

Re: Denford paint
Hi I read somewhere that someone else had tried to match the Denford blue. As I recall, they couldn't match the hammerite. I have another lathe and had the local paint shop mix a match in enamel paint. It was perfect but it wasn't hammerite. Mine isn't hammerite, its ordinary light blue. A previous...

280 Synchro Metric/imperial translation
I've got a metric 280 Synchro, but need some additional parts in order to cut accurate imperial threads with it. I could make most of it, but if I could find the quadrant and the 127/135T translation gear at least, it would be a good start. Anybody got these gathering dust?

Denford paint
Does anyone know the BS number, or paint manufacturers name for the light blue used on a Denford Synchro c 1980? The paint on mine is in pretty good condition generally, and I've decide to leave 'as is' now its cleaned up, but the splashback has been repainted (badly) in hammerite blue, and its anno...

Re: Denford 280 Synchro lathe
The drawing is BVS100-105, as attached. Thanks, that's really useful. At least if I do mash a gear, I've got the drawing now to make a new one! The mod seems to have been done in late 1978, so if I'm right about the build date of mine being 1979/80, then its already got the modified gears in it. Re...

Re: Denford 280 Synchro lathe
Yes the belt runs in oil, I use ISO32 hydraulic oil. You'll notice there's a thin toothed wheel in there too which seems to do nothing. On your lathe it does in fact do nothing - it's a trigger wheel for the speed readout on the electric-speed-control model. Take care when changing the high-low spe...

Denford 280 Synchro lathe
Having recently bought a 280 Synchro, c1980, the model with the manual speed change lever. I thought I'd better take the top off the headstock and make sure everything was OK inside. Its spotlessly clean, the oil is so clear I can see the bottom of the casting through it, and the gears are all in go...
