Re: Novamill Gets a 4th axis!

I have had a play and the results were good. I did a simple skim of the face and the suface and got a runout on the face of 0.01 or thereabouts and 0.05 on the outer surface, which is more or less what I measured on the 4th axis chuck backplate. I then tried a spiral cut using a 6mm ball nose cutter...

Starturn 3 jaw chuck

I have a Yamakawa 3 jaw chuck on my starturn lathe, does anyone know if I can get a set of outside jaws for this?

Thanks

Re: Starturn 4 electronics

Good idea ;)

The main board says Syntel 1984 and the drivers are PKS Digiplan SD2

I would include all the connectors too, but for now, they are still on the wiring loom.

Re: New project: Starturn 4 conversion to Mach3

I`m just going through a starturn conversion to mach3 and I`m planning on taking off the limit switch override as, like you say, you dont need this on mach3 as the software automatically backs the axis off the switch. Also this could be dangerous if it was accidentally pressed in during a homing mov...

Here are all the bits I have for sale...

The stepper motors would be included as well.

Re: Novamill Gets a 4th axis!

Morning! Unfortunately I didnt take any photos of the drive when I had it appart but the arrangement was quite simple, maybe a little too simple for what a harmonic drive needs for good running. I once worked on an actuator concept and we had more alignment features and some additional bearings than...

Ballscrew Lubrication - which oil ?

Morning!

I have two machines now...I novamill and a starturn. I was wondering what the best lubrication for the ballscrews was and where I could get it from? Do you guys go for oil or grease?

Thanks

Starturn 4 electronics

Hi! I`m just about to take out the original driver boards and some of the power supply parts from my starturn 4 as I am upgrading to new stepper motors and controllers. If anyone is interested in the electronics and the original stepper motors then let me know!

Re: Novamill Gets a 4th axis!

Thats the one! I bought the tailstock from the same guy too. I priced up the harmonic drive on its own from china and it is about £200 so I dont think the whole unit is that bad a price. (if its the same make of harmonic drive) I think the design needs a better bearing arrangement as there is no rea...

Novamill Gets a 4th axis!

It was always part of my plan to have a 4th axis but with all the retro fit and mods it got put on a back burner. But finally I have got around to it :D I had a look around at all the usual rotary tables and couldn’t really get away from the backlash issue in the worm gear arrangement. I thought abo...

Wanted Small CNC lathe

I`m looking for a small-ish Denford CNC lathe, starturn/novaturn size maybe. I`m more interested in good quality mechanics as I may convert anyway.

Let me know what you have...

Thanks

Re: Novamill - additional holes in table?

Hi, I dont seem to have a decent photo of the table, you can just see some semi circles cut out in this one... I wouldnt worry too much about loosing height. If you get a low profile collet chuck you wont have a problem. Its only an issue with the quick change stuff. Depending on what you are going ...

Starturn 5

Hi,

Has anyone got any photos of the Starturn 5 without the slideway bellows on? I`m wondering if a tailstock could be fitted??

Thanks

I measured my max spindle speed at ~5000rpm. I think the motor and spindle pulleys are 1:1 if I remember correctly.

Re: Novalmill - additional holes in table?

Hi, Yes the one from arc euro trade is ideal, good price too at about £30. Saves drilling that nice original denford table. Its typical soft cast iron though... I didnt want to machine the denford bed in any way so I drilled and counterbored the arc euro bed. Unfortunately the arc euro slots dont qu...

Re: Spindle bearing access

Hi, They are quite chunky bearings on the spindle but easy to remove. You can see the lower one just by removing the cover plate located on the outside of the head. I changed mine as I was getting a strange knocking noise. Cost about £80 for a pair of angular contact bearings from simplybearings. I ...

Re: Novalmill - additional holes in table?

Hi, I thought this too. In the end I bought a X1L long table from arc euro trade, machined off the bits on the underside that make it fit the X1 and bolted it to the Denford table. This gives you three T slots and a slightly bigger table. You do of course loose some of your valuable height though.

Re: Novamill Column Raising Block

Hi John, It was indeed machined from a huge block of cast iron. Even though the novamill is capable of machining this material and the accuracy required the block is far too big for the travel available. You would have to split it up and bolt it together but you would have to be carefull you maintai...
