Thanks Dazz
I sorted it in the end bought two gears with enough material on them to machine the specifics from the drawing.

Gearbox gears
Hi I am after two gears from a 280vs gearbox. Does anyone know if there is a lathe being broken for spares anywhere? One is the 16t of the 2nd shaft from the bottom the other is the one that is moved by the rotary gear selector via the rack.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Viceroy Boring Table
I have the same table but mine has 3 grub screws at 120 degrees apart. I use it when milling on a 280vs and never had it rotate on me.

Re: 280vs tachometer
That could well be my problem. I'm supplying dc to it. Hadn't realised it was ac but thought I read another post about supplying dc 12v.
Still no luck.

Re: 280vs 3 phase conversion
Thanks Dazz All up and running now. Will set the varispeed so that 50hz on the motor gives 1500rpm in high gear at the chuck. Coolant pump has a 3.5uF capacitor on delta and runs fine. 260v on the capacitor side windings so could do to be around 2.5uF but will see if it gets hot after 20mins. Any id...

Re: Steady 5.5" or 6"
Thanks Richard that clears up the measurements,
Pete it is the same as this one in good condition. Away from the lathe at the moment so can't take a picture of the actual one.
Do you have a picture of yours and a measurement from bed flat to centre please

Steady 5.5" or 6"
So I have had a fixed steady that came with my second hand 280vs 15 years ago. After trying to use it today it is too low. It measures 5.5" to bed flats. My 280vs seems to measure 6". All the time I thought this was a 5.5" lathe! So the question is was a 6" lathe and steady produced or are my vernie...

280vs tachometer
Ive just converted to single phase with a vfd but am having trouble getting the tachometer to read. Ive powered it with with 12v and get the 0000 display up but no increase in display with revs. Ive traced the wiring diagram and all seems well. Any ideas if it needs more than just power and the sens...

Re: 280vs 3 phase conversion
Thanks Dazz most helpful. Will go with your sizes first on the varispeed then source some pulleys.
Motor is now running on a hitachi sj200 vfd in delta.
What did you do about the 3 phase coolant pump? I'm thinking of just using a capacitor on delta around 5uF.

Re: 280vs 3 phase conversion
Thanks Dazz Great looking machine you have there. Any idea of the pulley ratios you settled on? I'll go down the vfd route now. Looks like the original motor can be wired delta as there are 3 wires on the n terminal. I'm going to attempt to keep the original switch gear and rewire it to control the ...

Re: viceroy oil level/dowels
Mine are 7/16 unf d3 camlocks so looks like it's the expensive option for me.
My pipe does indeed exit behind the bed at the rear - looks like that is where my oil leak has been from. A case of over filling. Just proped the cap open and let it drain overnight.
Thanks for the help.
Mike

Re: viceroy oil level/dowels
Thanks Andy Does your tube exit behind the bed at the headstock end. I have what looks like an oil pipe with a stainless flap covering it. Always wondered what that was. Looks like mine has been overfilled in the past - it always leaked so that was probably the cause. At least it wasn't dry. Will tr...

viceroy oil level/dowels
I am hoping the experts on here have the answer to this one. I have a viceroy 280vs metric 3 phase and see in the manual that the cavity containing the gears to the left of the headstock has an oil can symbol for topping up using the 19mm fill plug in the top under the control box. What level should...
