WANTED FIXED STEADY + CHANGE GEARS VICEROY TDS 1.1

Post by DrewD » Wed 17 Jan , 2018 2:42 am

Hello, I'm looking for a fixed steady and a set of metric Thread cutting change gears to buy. I think the gears are A-G??? I don't really use the internet that much and since my Grandad passed away I've got no1 I can ask for help. It's my first lathe I bought my self as the lathe I used to use had to be sold for the "family" that suddenly appear after years. It seems everything I want to make I need to cut threads or a steady. I don't know if this is even the right place to ask but if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks again

Hi Drew,

Sorry to hear about your grandad, it sounds like he meant a lot to you.

Your lathe has a gearbox on the front? With a round dial and a lever that you can set to N at the top or one of 5 positions? If so then the A-G gears are usually held on a stud under the end gear cover. If they are missing come back and let us know. Post up some pics of your lathe in any case.

The steadies are very hard to come by. You might do better to make one.

I have a 4 1/2" steady but can't remember if it is a fixed or traveling. it fits the bed on my Boxford TUD but as I have the later TUD I need a 5".
Ill try and remember to look in the Garage tomorrow after work. If you can find out if it will fit let me know. I was going to put it on ebay.

Thanks guys for the replys. Yes my Grandad is the whole reason I love engineering in general. I don't come on the internet that often as you can probably see but I'm going to start. I'll take some pictures and see what you both think. The change gears were missing when I bought the lathe but at the time I thought the gear box did the work. I have got gear D but I read that's something to do with reversing aswel as cutting threads??? It's got the numbered dial 1-5 on the front with the lever to match 1-5. I'll get back asap with some pictures and go from there. Thanks again

Gear D doesn't do reversing, except that it sits on the tumbler reverse pivot. The tumbler itself does the reversing. What the lettered gears do is allow you to cut the full range of threads as shown on the front of the gearbox.

Look at the gear cutting chart. You'll see letters in the boxes along the top. The threads below the letter D are the ones you can cut right now with your one change gear. On a metric machine that means 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 of the common-use thread pitches. For 1.25 and 1.75 you'll need a G and for 0.8 you'll need an A.

It's a shame your gears are missing, they are usually kept on that stud.

Hi Walid.

The spare gears should be stored on a bolt inside the gear change cover. Are you sure that they are not there?

Just in case you really don't have them, here is the full drawing set for getting new ones made. This is for the metric lathe.

Original gears are just normal mild steel. You'd have to be careful with plastic gears but they might get you out of trouble. You could keep the steel D gear on there most of the time.

Do you have gear cutting equipment?

Walid for Metric sizes just multiply by 25.4

So, for example, for 0.625" ---- 0.625 x 25.4 = 15.875mm
For 9/16" ---- 9/16 x 25.4 = 14.2875mm

Ok I now and I have convertr in my fhon
Mester pete
Do you thaing
The lathe matric like my viceroy
If we pring anather gears gave us emperial threads (like A-to -G) not all gears

Or
Metric lathe for metric only (mm)
And emperial lathe for emperial only (inch )

You can't do metric-inch or inch-metric by just changing the stud gears a-g, you need compound gears like 127/100 or 127/130 in the train. There's a lot of info about on it but basically the answer to your question is no.
