Post by bpmsl » Tue 28 Jun , 2011 23:35 pm

novaturn atc motor gearbox is noisy/squealy and vibrating sounds like bearing gone, can i strip it down or do i need a replacement? If so are any availble or are there any modern equivalents about.

You can remove it from the housing and oil it.

The gears are damaged if the turret is adjusted when in position rather than while indexing.

The gears can be damaged in a crash.

The Gearhead is "ITP S/Turn GS38.0060" The Denford Stock number is BI00302C

I have just checked and we have one in stock. Selling price is £74.60

OK Steve Thanks,
I'll strip it down and give it a lube and see what happens. It's sounded a bit rough since i bought the lathe, but with turning it over alot to fix the issues with the position sensor disk it's now really squealing and vibrating.

I've only adjusted the tool height once and did it while that carosell was moving, as I actually bothered to read the manual for once! To be honest once having seen inside the changer the need for doing it like that was obvious.

Will see how i go and give you a bell if i need the new one.

Thanks Again.

OK finally got fed up with the squealing so looked at this properly...

The gearbox is fine and has previously been replaced with a maxton 110455 60:1

The motor however is not, the bearings have gone and it appears that to get the motor in the heat sink the label is removed so I dont know the specs. The Auto-changer supplys 36v to the motor to hold againts the stops and -24v to change tool post location. The 24v maxton motor is spec'ed for 36v max but wont fit in the heatsink.

Will the maxton one be ok? I suspect it'll cook without a heatsink. Or does anyone have any details on a direct replacement for the motor?

As always any help much appreciated.
Cheers

Barry, i think they use half the voltage to hold the position. So it would be 24v to rotate and 12v to hold.

They may only use 12v to rotate and 6v to hold, this may depend on the type of machine.

you are correct, 24volts DC to rotate forward & 12Volts DC to clamp.

Thanks folks,
The voltages I've posted were taken from a multimeter across the disconnected motor supply wires so I believe them to be correct, unless not having the motor in circuit changes things at all.

Maxon do seem to do an exquivalent dimension 24v motor but you don't want to know how much it is... ouch!

Anyway being a tight git I've taken the moror apart and removed the bronze bushing and ordered a ball bearing to replace it with. Should be silky smooth then... hopefully I've not buggered it up in the process, but it was knackered already I guess.

Will advise how things go after the refit should be sorted by next weekend.

OK bearing replaced but it looks like there is another one inside the motor that I cant get at so its alot better but still vibrating from time to time.

Is the Gearhead "ITP S/Turn GS38.0060" Denford Stock number is BI00302C still in stock and is it the motor and gearbox?

Sucess, the price of a replacement motor made me think again. So ive machined the bearing seat deeper and fitter two bearings at the gearbox end. Smooth as silk now.
Thanks for the help.
