2D Design V:1.26

Post by Gcodeman » Sun 05 Feb , 2017 17:55 pm

Hi.
I've been struggling for a couple of months to get both pieces of my Novaturn software to preform together. I run V1:43 VR Turning, as its the only version I could get to run on the machine. I've now come to the conclusion that 2D Design will never work with a manual tool change machine. The reason being, there is no way ( that I can find) to change from ATC to manual T/C, so the only straight turning tools (except from boring) can only be given the tool number 1,3.5 & 7. Off set values established in VR Turn have be typed into the active tools parameters, but disappear when exiting 2D Design. Any G code program generated via the CAD/CAM would also have the wrong directional X moves as the turret operates in a different quadrant to the manual tool post.
Am I correct in this, or have I just been having an unlucky experience?

I'm sure I have seen an option to set which side of the bed the tools are and the direction of rotation CW or CCW the default for the tool

Have you had a go at just editing the .mml file? It is just a text document so you can open them up in wordpad or notepad, edit and save.

In Quickturn 2D when you go to save/load a machine file it lists the full names. just search in file explorer for the location,

Try to change the tool changer 'Auto=1' to 'Auto=0'

Here is the file from the Turn270,

My VR Turn parameters are manual tool change. The point I'm trying to get a definitive answer to is: Will 2D Design generate G code to run a manual tool change Novaturn? The ATC is homed in the positive quadrant while the manual is in the negative, so it follows that any generated G code will have x values to reflect this. This is after all a training machine, so if the operator can change the orientation of the tooling from one quadrant to another the process should be straight forward and fully described in the manuals, which leads me to think that the 2D Design isn't intended to be used with a manual tool change machine. I would very much liked to be proved wrong.

Hi. Martin. The soft ware is Quick Turn 2 D Design V1.26 which came loaded on a PC along with VR Turn V1.45 which now won't run the machine, the only version that will run the lathe is V1:43 The lathe is a Novaturn commissioned in 1997 to a school in Wales I bought it before Christmas from a chap in Bristol. I'm by no means a new comer to cnc machining, I once owned and operated three Bridport series one milling machines along with an eight tool turret Colchester lathe and Oh yes an Orac. I current have a little cnc mill running on a Mach3 control. As you can see I'm not having the best of luck in getting this system up and running, I'm currently experimenting with the Mach3 turning Wizards in an attempt to get the Novaturn running. Any help and advice on where I'm going wrong would be appreciated.

The reason I suggested changing the ATC auto=0 is because in VRmilling when you have a call for a tool change the machine stops and flags up on the screen to change the tool. I don't have any ATC machines in work so am used to it doing this. I wondered if denford had not included a default setting the a manual tool change in Quickturn 2d as the modern machines have ATCs and by changing the setting in the machine mml file it would then write a line to stop the machine and call a manual tool change.

I hope denford respond with the answer but having re read your post, where you talk about being in the positive/negative quadrant do you mean which side the tools come at the job from? Sorry I'm not great on the terms but on my manual lathe the tool post approaches the job at the 9oclock position if you look at the chuck and it spins CCW, I am looking down on top of the tools. On my starturn 5 with ATC comes at the job from the 3 oclock position, the tools are upside down and the chuck spins CCW.

If this is what you mean about the direction of the X travel then there is an option to change this I believe.

Click on Options, Machine Options (shows a picture of an ATC) and then select the 'front cutting machine' option, it then asks if you want to invert tools (I selected yes). I have version 1.22 installed at the moment.
testformanual.fnl
settings include Auto=0 for ATC in the MML file
(3.25 KiB) Downloaded 565 times
testformanuafrontcutl.fnl
settings include Auto=0 for ATC in the MML file and front cut selected
(3.25 KiB) Downloaded 536 times
If you have a look at the two files I have generated you will be able to tell if that works in the x travel. From running the post process in the 1st file the tool was at the top of the screen machining downwards and I could see the bottom of the cutter. In the second 'frontcut' file the tools came from the bottom of the screen and I was viewing them from the top of the cutter.

Hope that helps.

You can specify if it has a toolchanger fitted in the Machine Parameters in VRTurning.

Go in to Setup then Machine Parameters (Password is denny) & then Tool Change & set Auto Changer to 0.

Hi. Martin. The VR Turn parameters are set for a manual tool changer and five tools and their off sets are set from T01 to T05. My question is about the Denford CAD/CAM software that came with the PC as a package. I have Quick Turn V1.26 In tooling/machine, materials options there isn't any obvious way of changing the ATC, which is programed in the positive quadrant, to a manual T/C that is programed in the negative quadrant. All X moves in the imbedded test pieces program (except facing cuts that end below the centre line) that are generated by the CAD/CAM are unsigned and so are presumed to be positive and working in the positive quadrant. Is there an option that I haven't found that allows the X values to be reversed so the program will run in the negative section as when I run the test program in 2D simulation the tool is orientated to cut on the left hand side of the work piece, (manual tool change) but the simulation shows in cutting on the right hand side (ATC). The simulation soon stops due to the assigned tool being unable to continue, with the prompt message to check that an internal tool has not been selected. Also is there an option that allows me to use the off sets of tools 01 to 05 in VR Turn instead of using the tool positions 1,3,5 & 7 that are the only choices in the turret in the CAD/CAM software. Thanks.

Hi. Pete. Thanks for all your input, but I'm afraid I couldn't open your attachments, hopefully the muddied waters will soon start to clear, but in the mean time there's still G code. Keeping the old skills alive!!!

to open the files, download, right click on them and select 'open with' and select either wordpad or notepad. they are just text files but have .fnl as the file extension.

if they work and you can follow the way I set them up then when it comes to the tool locations, can't you just use the alternate numbers? and when it calls for a tool change you just install the required tool?

I don't have VRturning as my lathe is DOS based, but I do have VRmilling for machines at work. when I click on the box to zero the xyz position a window pops up and in one of the tabs in that window I can set what tools are to what numbers. I have never set tool offsets as when it comes to a program that would require a tool change I generally split it and re zero for the new tool. this is easier I suppose with milling as I only need to reset z for a tool change as xy stay the same.

Where are you? if you aren't to far from Sheffield/Barnsley I could have a look, 2 pairs of eyes and all that. Also I have used VRmilling for years and a cant imagine them being a million miles apart

We use the same test programs at Denfords in inspection when testing both manual tooling machines & automatic toolpost.

The difference on the machines is the home direction & limits set in VRTurning . As you move the tool towards the centre line it should be counting negative.

Hi. Martin.
We don't seem to be getting any where with what to me is a very real problem, I'm not getting eggy but if I lay it out in bullet type presentation my problem might (hopefully) start to make some sense.

My Novaturn's parameters (VR Turn V1.43) are set for manual tool change, with 12 as the number of available tool positions, five of which are active in the tool library complete with off sets, tool orientation ie.tool facing upwards to the left of the work piece as they would be when physically set in the manual tool change tool post. Active tools have been assigned numbers T01 to T05 as you might expect with this style of manual tool change.

In Quick Turn 2 D Design V1.26 options (tooling and materials) there is only the one choice for tool change when a component is sent for post processing and that is an ATC. The only tool numbers for straight forward turning tools available in the tool library are 1,3.5 & 7 These positions cannot be changed, although the tooling can.

When the test program has been post processed and sent to the machine to run in 2D simulation, the cutting tool is shown it its designated orientation in VR Turn, that is facing upwards to the left of the work piece. When the tool tries to cut the profile (to the right of the work piece, that an ATC would) the program stalls, with the message to check that an internal cutting tool hasn't been assigned, rather than the external tool required to preform that turning operation. Does this mean that in fact the tools, although set in a tool post in the negative quadrant should be orientated in the tool library as cutting in the positive quadrant.

While I appreciate I'm new to this machine and control, I don't feel I should be experiencing this degree of difficulty, as a generated part program intended to run with the manual tool change should be as easy to generated as one with an ATC.

My question still is, how do I post process a component drawing to reflect the setting and orientation of my manual tool change machine, as with any program generated in 2 D Design the tool numbers will differ as well as the quadrant in which the part programme has been generated to operate in, in which case do I change the tool numbering in my VR Turn tool library to T01, T03 etc in order to fall in with the generated program and how will the X values react when transferred to the negative quadrant, also would any additional tooling required for a program running on my machine be assigned the tool numbers 2,4,6 & 8 that would be reserved for drills and boring bars. Thanks.

hi,

I think you may be getting a little confused as to the CAM requirements.

The program generated by QuickTurn 2D design is the same regardless of whether a turret or manual tool post is fitted. The tool change line will read M06 then the tool number.
The settings in VR Turning then tell the machine either to carry out a tool change automatically or prompt to make a manual tool change.

The tool numbers and offsets in VR Turning must match the tool numbers in Quickturn and ideally the tooling in VR Turning would be set as the default tooling in Quickturn: Tool 1 being the RH Turning, Tool 2 the boring bar, 3 LH turning, 4 10mm drill, 5 threading, 6 centre drill, 7 parting and 8 5mm drill.

While these can be changed in QuickTurn it would be much better to change them in VR turning as if you updated the software this is the factory default tool numbering.

If you have a front mounted manual Tool post in Quick Turn the "machine options" box for front cutting should be selected and the external tools should not be shown as inverted.

Any programs now created will cut from the front.

The tool orientation and definitions in the VR Turning software should again be left as default. these are purely for graphics simulation and have no effect on the cutting of the program. The simulation in vr turning will also always show the tool at the top of the billet regardless of the turret or toolpost.

In short if you had a clean install of VT Turning the tooling would be shown in the correct positions with external tools in positions 1,3,5 and 7. Internal tools being 2,4,6 and 8 All you would then have to do is to configure the Quickturn as front cutting and it all should then work.

Hi. Steve.
Right thanks for that, so if I use Quick Turn I can only use a total of 8 tools even though I have the capacity for more. I'll change the tool numbers to match an ATC and try to generate a test piece of my own design and see how we get on.

Hi. Martin. Sorry about the Steve in the last post, no idea where that came from. Happy to report a degree of success today. I was reasonably sure it would be something I was doing wrong, probably comes from the days when things were not so simple and you had to be on your guard against programing errors, when G code and canned cycles were state of the art. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, at least I'm off the bottom of the learning curve!

Glad to see this making head way. It has given me some info re the set up of the ATC, has the tooling locations always been that? I'm going to get my Starturn 5 full functioning soon so it would be good to know.

Hi. Pete. Do you mean the tool numbers T01 T02 etc, if so that's where I started to go wrong as I numbered all my tools in sequence as you would for a manual tool change, but in order to use the 2D Design software they must mirror the tool positions in the ATC ie. T01 T03 etc. also you must choose from the suggested tooling in the various tool libraries for the different Denford machines. As soon as I get a bit more confident I'll try to edit the generated G code and change the tool numbers in order to reflect the manual tool change and hopefully introduce more that eight tools in a cycle, but its early days yet. Good luck with yours!

Yes it is re the default locations for the tools. My starturn 5 has a 8 position rotation turret as per the ones you see on other machines, odd numbers for external turning even for internal/boring.
In the original design software (lathecam designer) you could only install 6 tools and I couldn't find a way of changing the parameters, also the smallest external parallel turn it would let you draw was 2mm (width of parting tool). This is why I bought Quickturn 2D Design even though I knew the threading commands it outputs aren't ones that the starturn understands. Some one posted up a test program with threading which I tried, everything but threading worked but I noticed it identified each section so figured I would be able to learn how to write threading cycles by looking at how Lathecam does them.

I did wonder if it mattered as to which tool went in which location (wondered about possible tool to chuck collision if in the wrong place) and wondered what tools to load up. (forgive my knowledge on tool names I'm making it up as I go along)
I figured the following
a tool for normal external parallel and facing (rh tool?)
as above but the opposite hand for cutting back
a parting tool
a threading tool
a centre drill
a boring bar
a drill suitable for a boring bar (10mm?)
a pilot drill to go from centre to 10mm (5mm?)

I liked the idea of mounting a small Jacobs chuck in the ATC to make it easier to change drills. I currently don't have any inserts to hold the even number tools so will have to make some up (any ideas on what metal I should use I have lots of round mild steel but don't know what spec).

Trying to help on your problem has made me look more into the configuration of the machine setup files so I now feel a bit happier at generating one that matches the old machine files I have for the starturn5 so you have in fact helped me! It's one of the reasons I like to try and help on the forum, I learn more!!

Cheers
