This document shows you how to alter the power saving settings on Windows 7.
Adjust the settings for reliable USB communication between PC and Mill, Lathe, Laser or rapid prototyping machine
Try this if you find the machine times out or you get timeout messages after a certain time - you're more likely to see it on a laptop or "green" desktop

I tried altering the power settings but the same issue arises. The machine is disconnecting before starting to cut.

Could the firm ware need updating to communicate with windows 8? which is running on a macbook.

The machine works ok with windows 7 on a Dell machine.

Is this on a laser?

Are you using a laptop, if so is the power supply plugged in?

Have you tried other USB ports on the computer?

The USB port you are using is probably not providing enough power to the machine. You may need to use a powered USB hub.
