Machine light problem - Triac VMC

Post by Matt09102 » Fri 01 Feb , 2019 21:36 pm

Hi, I have recently taken ownership of a 1995 Triac VMC with a 6 tool ATC. Currently running VRMilling V2.

The 12V machine light was not working, and after investigation the bulb was found to be blown.

I replaced the bulb with a 16 Watt G4 halogen bulb. The one removed was 20 Watt, and 16 was the closest I could get.

I then switched the light on and the main garage fuse board tripped out.

I removed the light and checked all wiring, the light worked fine when connected to a separate 12V supply and all connection appeared fine.

The incoming supply was also checked and was just below 12V.

Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this? I presume there must be a transformer inside the machine - could this be at fault?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I think the light would have a 12V AC supply so is the bulb you used AC or DC? Did you check it with an AC supply?

Thanks for the reply.

I tested the light with a 12v jump pack. So would make sense why it doesn’t work on the machine.

The bulb doesn’t say whether it’s AC or DC. They are Diall halogen G4 bulbs from Screwfix.

I have ordered some AC G4 bulbs so will try that and let you know.

Regards,
Matt.

I have tried a different bulb today, which is rated for AC supply and still having the same issue with tripping the circuit breaker.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I would check the cable from the lamp all the way back to the transformer you may have a short to earth that will not show up if there is a blown bulb.
