Failed triac motor speed control

Post by edwardsjc » Mon 12 Mar , 2012 13:38 pm

Hi

I have my eye on a Triac mill from around 1994. The spindle speed control doesn't work, so the spindle only runs very slowly.

In the worst case, how much is it likely to cost to fix ?
Are there any common motor speed control failures ?

Sorry if this is a bit vague.

Thanks

Jason

I'm sure I've read about others who have replace the drive before on here - it's just a case of finding those posts again to see what they fitted... :?
I'm sure the motor is a DC SEM which Denford also fitted to lots of other machines like: Novamill, novaturn, starmill, starturn, orac

Failure will either be the spindle drive or the motor brushes / armature is worn out.
The motor tacho could also be an issue - not sure if it's used on every drive.
It could also be the 0-10v speed command signal to the drive which is faulty but this is less likely.

You will need to check the analogue voltage in to the drive.

If it is a standard Triac PC or Triac VMC it will have a Sprint 1200 fitted,

If it is a Triac Fanuc then it will have a sprint 1600i fitted.

Thanks for the information so far !

Can I tell if its a TRIAC Fanuc/PC/VMC from the serial number, which is 40202 A, manufactured May 1994.

Thanks

The oldest electronic record I can find is, unfortunately, December 1994 which is serial 41124D
I'm not sure the paper records are still around...

The machine is described as "Fully enclosed and with a 6 station
tool changer, and Fanuc or Heidenhain simulated interchangeable
controls."

Does this help to identify which type of drives its likely to have ?

Thanks

Sorry, forgot to say, the chap selling the machine tells me the spindle runs at approximately 500 RPM. Does this help to narrow down the likely problem ?

Thanks

Not really - it could still be the motor /drive / drive adjustments / analogue input at fault.
