How hot- Stepper motors

Post by Multispool » Sat 30 Oct , 2010 21:03 pm

Hi, Just got back to retrofitting a Triac, simple question:
Testing the system and the original steppers are getting hot, but how hot is normal? Can hold them but they haven't yet been running under load.

Original stepper motors.
48v switch mode psu.
Motion controls microstepper drives.

Just need some quidance as to how hot I should let them get...

Thanks.

the stepper motors will run the hottest while standing still, as soon as you start working they'll cool down a fair bit. When stationary they are being held in position, which builds up a bit of heat.

That is correct! The steppers do not use any more power when running in fact they can use less. Its normal for them to get hot.

Thanks guys,

That puts my mind at rest!

PSU cool, drive heat-sinks cool. Just the lack of information on the old original motors made me use a certain amount of caution while connecting up and testing...
