Machines / Desktop Tutor cable details

Post by bradders » Fri 17 Aug , 2007 10:49 am

Can anyone help in the specification / layout for cables used for Denford Machines connected with Desktop Tutors. As I understand, usually the dispatched machines where set up as follows :-

*******.GO (File)

IBM.RS2 1
$2F8 3 COM2
DENFORD.KBD 1
18.2 $3F8 4
VGA.CRT 0
FANUCMD.APP

Where
COM 1 - 18.2 $3F8 4 - Desktop Tutor
COM 2 - 18.2 $2F8 3 - Machine Electrical Box
-----------------------------------------------------
Now there were two types of Desktop Tutors supplied by Denford's

1. Lathe or Miller specific (Earliest model with none removable overlays)
2. None specific for machines and had interchangeable overlays

Question for type 1 Desktop Tutor
Were the connecting cables from the PC to the Machine Electrical Box and Desktop Tutor both RS232 ?

I think for the type 2 Desktop Tutor
The cable to the Machine Electrical Box was an RS232 but the cable to the Desktop Tutor was a 25 pin to 25 pin ribbon cable and the RS232 wiring details were made in the Desktop Tutor itself?

Can anyone confirm ?

Both types of "desk top tutors" need connecting using a straight 25way pin to pin or a 25 to 9 way converter.

The difference is that the newer ones with the overlays needs to be set in the "GO" file. The newer one has a extra "1".

Older Keyboard (solid overlay)=DENFORD.KBD 1
Newer Keyboard (sliding overlays)=DENFORD1.KBD 1

Hardware/Software: Go to User Control Panel > Profile
Enter as much information about your CNC hardware and software as you can - it makes it easier for everyone to know what you're talking about then.

When Martin says straight 25 way cable, he means that it is connected pin for pin (1-1 2-2 3-3 etc.....)

(Unless its a 25 to 9 way :? , but the effect is the same)
