Warped cross-slide on TDS1

Post by Pete. » Fri 04 Nov , 2016 19:36 pm

I'm working my way through this TDS1 and I noticed that the cross-slide seemed to rock a bit so I set it on my surface plate to check it out. Sure enough it's got a 2 thou belly in the underside, and added to that the compound slide rocks on it's base so I guess the thin casting has twisted a bit over the years. Here's a video of the problem

So I'm busy rough-scraping the slideways flat and then I'm going to attack the compound slide seat. I did try to fit it up in my 4-jaw and turn the compound but it's just too long to swing in my lathe, so it'll have to be scraped all the way.

Here you can see the ways were only touching in the middle, not surprising given whet we saw in the vid

So I have at it with the Biax power scraper. It would have been possible to take the large amount of metal off with a hand scraper but that would have taken a long long time - typically you scrape 0.0001-0.0002" off at a pass so here is the result of about a dozen passes with the Biax.

And here we have a fairly flat slideway. There's a dip right at the end which I'm not concerned about. Just like it is it's better than 90 percent of the machines out there. I'll rough in the top where the compound sits and come back to this later, in case it moves when I'm taking the top down flat.

Nice job. Out of interest, do you know the age of the TDS 1, the crosslide on mine looks to be thicker than yours, and the compound slide pivot mount is recessed into it.
I wonder if Denfords reaised there was a weakness in the crosslide and beefed it up on later models.

I am in the process of converting my TDS-1 to electronic control of leadscrew and crosslide feedscrew using Autoartisans ELS control, and stepper motors.

It is a very basic form of cnc for old coggers who cant get their old head around cad/cam and cnc .

I'm afraid I don't there's no tag to tell me the age. I could measure it if you like.

Incidentally, if you have redundant change gears from your conversion, I would be interested in those. I am short quite a few.

The top of the cross slide was no better. First problem I had was that it was printing outside the area that the compound base sits on and I didn't want to scrape all that down so I set it up in my mill and fly-cut those bits a couple of thou lower.

Then the main cause of the rocking compound became apparent. There was a raised hump above the end of the wedge-hole, probably the result of a minor tool-to-chuck interface.

So I scraped that whole middle section low in a wide circle to prevent it ever causing the compound to totter on a raised bump again.

Much better now. The compound sits down flat and it will make the machine a lot less prone to chatter and poor finishes.

Do you know which sizes of change gears you require Pete, and I will check what I have. When I purchased my lathe it didn't have any, but I found someone selling a load of gears, so I brought the lot.

John, of the original gears I have only 16,56 and 60.

This leaves me needing - 18,24,32,36,40,44,46,48,52,54,72 and 80. I do have a 100/127 pair but I've yet to work out what compliments them for metric pitches. I suspect the stock set should be able to cover most of them.

I will check in the morning and list what I have.
Some I am sure are original Viceroy gears, but others I think are not, they are painted red but gear forms match the viceroy gears and bores are the same size.

Pete. Nearly forgot to list the gears as promised. Been mesmerised watching the old Viceroy automatically cut screw threads for the first time this morning.

Anyway here is a list of all the gears I have...

9/16 bore with keyway..

18 20 22 24 26 28 30 32 36 40 46 48 52 54 56 60 80 100 and a 127 which was broken but has been drilled and screwed to a steel backer, and works well.

9/16 bore with no keyway...

100/127 100/16

5/8 bore with no keyway..

80 with a tooth missing. 72/18

I also have the spider and studs to suit all the gears, and the tumbler reverse.

Would you like to come down and see all the gears etc and choose what you want, I no longer have any need for them and would be glad to see them go to a good home.

Today I had to make a custom hand scraper to scrape the cross-slide ways. Came out pretty well and I have the ways nearly done.
