Surfacing feeds - easy to fix?

Post by YouraT » Sun 30 Nov , 2014 18:27 pm

Hi all.

A quick question - I'm considering buying a 250 Tds1/1 that I've just been to see - in basically *excellent* condition, no wear that I can see anywhere, scraping/frosting marks visible all over the place (where they should be!), and very clean without having been powerwashed....!

Only one thing - the 'sliding' feeds work well, but I couldn't get the 'surfacing' feeds to do anything - no grinding noises or anything, just nothing. I was turning the spindle by hand as the machine wasn't connected to any power at the time. The cross slide moved by hand no trouble.

I'm very tempted to buy the machine anyway (not the cheapest, but as I said in very good nick apart from this little niggle), and fix the apron fault later.

Is this a common fault, and should it be easy to fix?? All and any advice gratefully received.

Cheers,

Youra.

Hardware/Software: None. I own a pre CNC Denford 280 Synchro lathe.

Hi
The large knob on the left hand end of the apron should turn freely through about 1/4 turn, with a distinct 'click' at each end. Turn the top of the knob away from you sets surfacing, turn the top of the knob towards you sets sliding. Then lifting the lever immediately to the right of the carriage handwheel should engage the chosen feed. Reversing feed direction is done with the tumbler reverse lever inside the end headstock cover. Its a pretty robust set up, but involves removal of the apron to actually inspect the works.

So - I've taken the plunge and bought the machine - it'll be delivered mid/end of next week.

Pictures etc.. as soon as!

Anyone want a (mechanically fine but cosmetically challenged) TDS 1/1 GBL ? That's my old machine.

Youra.
