Modifying a Myford Quick Release Toolpost to suit Vicerory

Post by Taylon » Sun 14 Jul , 2013 15:04 pm

Hello to you all,

Finally got the lathe working, now I have to address some minor issues like making a handle that was missing form the Myford tool-post/holder. That was the easy part as I also had the original Denford tool post for the lathe. The real modification is that the tool holders run out of adjustment before the tool in the holder can be aligned on centre.

Hence, what I am intending to do as a modification is the have made a 5mm thick spacer made, then drill and tap this spacer to the bottom of the myford tool change post. This spacer would have to replicate the plan view shape of the myford tool post which is complex, and would require a CNC milling facility to make an accurate spacer.

Any other helpful suggestions are welcome.

Kindest regards, John R.

I take it the problem is the toolholder block is too small. So that even with the toolholder fully raised,
an excessive amount of tool needs to be projected out to get to the centre line.
Firstly if your unit is similar to mine, the steel is hardened and ground,
I think it might find it is difficult/impossible to drill and tap it.
If you only want to raise the whole block up, why not just make a spacer
to raise it by the required amount ?, not ideal as there are two possible slip faces
rather than one, but worth a try.
Alternatively haunt Ebay until you see exactly the right item going cheap.
(Like what I done)
(My English teacher said I done real good)
Cheers !

Thank LesT,

The Myford tool block for the quick release tool holders is too low so the tool holders run out of adjustment before the tip of the tool is aligned to the centre line of the lathe centre ht.. Thus making a spacer is to the way to go. Thank you for your input, need to check this tool block is hardened before doing any further mods.

Kindest regards, John R.
