Top Slide Nut Mods to Reduce Backlash

Post by Taylon » Thu 23 May , 2013 23:23 pm

Hello to you all,

The top slide on my TDS/PCS lathe had a backlash in excess of 0.4mm. However to reduce this backlash the following mods were done to allow re-positioning of the nut by machining a grub screw groove all the way round the nut on the centre line of the clamp grub screw and a screw driver slot in the base to allow rotary adjustment (See Photo).

By rotating the nut against the top-slide lead screw then tightening the clamp grub screw any backlash can be removed and or minimized. Your comments on the suitability of this mod would be appreciated.

A similar procedure is used on the monarch and CVA lathes but instead of rotating the lead screw nuts they are angled in the vertical plane by an adjustment screw bearing down on the nut.

Kindest regards, John R.

Hello,
I have recently remove all ( 0.something backlash) by 'tinning' the threads. It worked better that I expected as backlash before was 0.7!
