Viceroy Change gears how many folks are missing them ?
Hi Guys
Change gears how many folks are missing them all or some ?
Iv looked through the forum and maybe im just thick but cant seem to find a definitive list of what should be with the lathe (TDS1)
so who has a full set would you list it please? pictures would be even better
If enough folks are interested I will inquire at a local engineers about the cost of having some made, or are any of the forum members willing to make some gears ?
I have found a few blue prints of some gears on this forum and the web if I went forward with this are the Denford people ok with me using these blue prints ??
Thanks
Steve

Theres a downloadable Denford lathe parts list on this site which seems to cover the TDS1, and lists changewheels. Imperial and metric lathes are different, which is yours?
Did you try John Ward?

Dont really know if it metric or imperial the cross slide and compound have an imperial scale (i will recheck this to be sure) but the tail stock has a metric scale but that could have been replaced at some point I only have 2 change wheels 2 with 80 t and 72/18 which look like metric wheels how can you tell the difference between metric and imperial ?
Thanks Steve

It depends on what leadscrew is fitted. Typically, an imperial machine would have 8TPI, and a metric would have 3mm pitch. You will have to do some careful measuring to determine what you have. 8 turns on an imperial leadscrew will move the saddle 1" (25.4mm) and 8 turns on a metric leadscrew will move it 24mm, so its not easy to tell.Steve_S wrote:Hi Richardrpwilson wrote:Theres a downloadable Denford lathe parts list on this site which seems to cover the TDS1, and lists changewheels. I'm not sure if the relevant drawings that show all the gears have been posted yet - they are quite hard to find.Steve_S wrote: ... cant seem to find a definitive list of what should be with the lathe (TDS1)

But drawings with numbers starting ML105-100 are what you need.
From ML105-100A1 (for Imperial leadscrews on non-gearbox machines prior to 11.3.1972)
16T - ML105-119
24T - ML105-121
32T - ML105-122
36T - ML105-123
40T - ML105-124
44T - ML105-125
46T - ML105-126
48T - ML105-127
52T - ML105-128
54T - ML105-129
56T - ML105-130
60T - ML105-131
80T - ML105-133
You should also have a compound gear (18T / 72T) and an 80T idler gear.
From 1972 onwards for Imperial leadscrews (Drawing ML105-100A2), the basic set remained, but an 100T idler replaced the 80T idler, and an additional compound set (18T / 66T) was added.
From ML105-100C (for Metric leadscrews on non-gearbox machines) the set was 16T, 24T, 32T, 40T, 48T and 80T (drawing numbers as above), with 2 additions:
20T - ML105-136
18T - ML105-139
The 100T idler plus both compound sets from the later imperial models were used - implying that the imperial set was re-designed / rationalised when the metric machine was introduced.
Transposing gears (English /Metric or Metric / English ) need to be considered separately.
All the above are 18DP, 20 degree pressure angle, and are not to be confused with the gearbox end drive gears which are 16DP - except the transposing gears.....
Hope this helps.
Andy

Thanks for that Andy
I have a compound gear (18T / 72T) and an 80T idler gear. but I have found this document (not the clearest copy) that would lead me to believe that's for metric gearing ????

Re: Viceroy Change gears how many folks are missing them ?
Steve,
The diagram that you posted shows the same information as I got from ML105-100C (they must have renumbered at some point).
The 80T shown there is not an idler - it is a stud gear (with a keyway).
The idler (plain bore with a boss on one side) is 100T
What information is shown on the plate on the LHS of your lathe?
Andy

Thanks Andy it show imperial.
Well the never ending quest for gears goes on, went to a local engineers with blue prints they wanted £200 per gear for 1 offs
Have now purchased a set not complete but now have
20 x2
24
26
28
32 x2
40
44
48
56
100
and i have compound gear (18T / 72T) and an 80T idler gear
with the gears having a 100 tooth one its a set from a metric lathe me thinks
so its a start so now i need a drawing or picture of the stud the change wheel bolts to the arm with or is it the same as the one i have on the compound gear ?? :
Sorry its been a while since i posted last been really busy
Thanks

If you need extra change gears at a reasonable price you can't do better than go to John Ward at Latheparts.Steve_S wrote:Thanks Andy it show imperial.

Re: Viceroy Change gears how many folks are missing them ?
Hi Steve
Just saw this post. I am on a similar hunt for changewheels for my TDS 1/2 metric lathe. From looking at the drawings this is what the full set should look like and the ones I have indicated by 'Yes'. They should all be DP of 18 (don't make the mistake I made of buying 16 DP from ebay which form part of the backgear). If you know of any for sale let me know!
There is a picture of my setup on the forum.
Changewheels
16t
20t
24t
28t
32t Yes
40t
48t Yes
80t
Idlers
66/18t Yes
72/18t Yes
100t
Cheers
Hywel
