TDS 1/1 Apron servicing

Post by gNick » Fri 17 Dec , 2010 15:08 pm

I am taking my TDS 1/1 apart to try and get the swarf out of everywhere and I am stuck trying to get the apron off.
Anyone got any ideas on how to do this?

Cheers
Nick

Hi,
I'm not sure about the terminology, is it the horizontal part across the Bed, (the saddle),
or the front casting (with the controls ) that you are struggling to remove ?.

There are a couple of screws that go through from the top of the saddle into the apron - they often have little plastic caps over them which just prise out using a fine screwdriver.

At the back of the apron is a retaining plate - has a couple of screw heads underneath if I remember right.
With that plate removed and the apron screws removed, the saddle should be easy to lift off.
You can then rotate the apron to see what else (if anything) is preventing its removal.

Hope this helps.

The main thing that holds the saddle down (apart from the Alan screws at the front and the Rear plate), is a large nut under a sliding block, it holds it down and runs up and down the centre of the bed. Its a bit difficult to see under the saddle. With that removed the saddle lifts off easily.

I fear that mine was a little different, naturally!

The saddle lifted off fine but I had to remove the bracket that holds the ends of the leadscrew and feed-shaft and then slide the apron off. Judging by the amount of rubbish in here this hasn't been done recently! Now to strip it down in my unheated workshop...

Now I am stuck with getting the compound slide apart - I can't see any reason why the leadscrew shouldn't unscrew completely but it won't.
I also can't persuade the pivot to come apart, in this case I think that it is just a case of persuading the locking pins to loosen off.
