They were running the Laser off DELL computers and for some reason we have experienced problems with intermittant disconnection on these PC's before.

Also if you are running off a laptop make sure that they are plugged into the mains supply, we have also had intermittantly disconnection problems when the battery in the laptop has started get low.

Check the USB section in Device Manager and check for any problems like yellow question marks or red crosses on the ULS USB driver

I would also check on screen saver settings and powersaving settings,

It could be the PC is trying to close down to powersave.

Hardware/Software: Go to User Control Panel > Profile
Enter as much information about your CNC hardware and software as you can - it makes it easier for everyone to know what you're talking about then.

This quotefrom another post would also help (a dedicated USB card is a very good idea - especially if the motherboard is budget)
I would make sure the USB hardware is good quality, we have had problems with VIA chipset USB hardware sending garbage out to our machines and the laser cutters - a dedicated USB PCI card using NEC chips fixed this for us.
