6600 Pro spindle starts and then stops

Post by AidanJ » Thu 27 Sep , 2018 1:35 am

Hi All,

Our 6600Pro router has suddenly stopped working properly. The Spindle will spin up, and then spin down. The program keeps running as normal. We have to stop it as it will damage the unit. There is no warning that the spindle has stopped.

This happens on gCode that we have run multiple times without incident (so can I rule that out)?
It happens whether I'm running a program from gCode, or if I turn it on from the Control Panel-->Jog--Spindle

Any thoughts or advice on how to trouble shoot this?

Thank you in advance

It may be worth checking the spindle drive in the electrical panel.

It has a display which may be showing a fault.

it should normally show Stop in red then change to a value between 0 & 400 when asked to run.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the advice. I've checked our electrical panel and I cannot find any display.

The machine looks to be a 6600 & not a PRO.

It could be as simple as the Kress spindle motor brushes.

Thanks for the clarification - You're correct it's not the pro.

Is there anyway to confirm the brushes are the cause of the fault - would you advise me taking it apart, or sending it in for service?

You can plug the motor directly in to a 240 volt kettle plug type lead to test it.

Thanks. We've just heard back from Denford and they've walked me through testing. Looks like the brushes are at fault. will order some new ones tomorrow and see if that solves the problem

For your and other's reference, I'll post the instructions below - they were helpful for me.
----------
  • The fuse must be OK as the spindle starts.

The green spindle indicator is saying the spindle is enabled even though it stops.

When the spindle stops could you confirm that the guard remains closed and locked?

I have marked on the diagram where the spindle power comes from on the brown and Blue wires. There should be 220V AC on these when the spindle is running.

Could you get a meter and measure the voltage on these wires when the spindle is supposed to be running? (you can push the meter probes onto the crimp terminals in the slots next to where the wires are fitted)

If the motor power is present once you start the spindle and remains when the spindle stops then almost certainly it would indicate the motor brushes are the problem.

There are two different motor brushes fitted to the motor one of them has a protection device built in to shut the motor down when the brushes are worn.

Attached are instructions as to how to replace the brushes.
