Problems cutting HIPS

Post by geofftech » Fri 05 Feb , 2016 12:29 pm

We are struggling to cut 3mmHIPS. The shavings seems to melt and gets gummed up around the cutting bit eventually becoming useless as it is thick with melted and hardened shavings. The settings are all correct. We have tried several different combinations of feed rate and speed but cant stop the problem. The cutting bit is 2mm. Any suggestions?

are you using a single flute cutter? It has been a while since I machined any but remember I got best results with one.

The suggested rate in the VR milling Library is 2300RPM 1500mm/min and a cut depth of 1.5 x the cutter diameter.

Generally if the material is melting the cut feed is not high enough as the cutter is rubbing and causing heat from friction. you could drop the spindle speed or increase the feed as long as you don't put too much load on the cutter a larger cutter might be better.
