Novamill controler conversion EStop and Hood open pins

Post by bpmsl » Sun 02 Nov , 2014 16:30 pm

Hi folks,
I've been using my novamill for a while as a 3d printer with a 4 axis USBCNC control card and an extra stepper driver.

I'll shortly be wanting to do some machining so need to get the interlock sorted for the spindle and hood.

From memory I use the Stop pin on the 96 way header (a25) to pause my controller so it doesn't carry on regardless when the EStop has been hit, but is there a separate pin on the header to identify when the machine hood is open?

At the moment I'm using it as a 3D printer with the extruder mounted on the side of the Z axis so I've not tried firing up the spindle yet, is the spindle prevented from running by the hardware interlock relays with the hood open? I'm not prevented by the hardware interlocks from moving the table with the hood up at the moment.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

unscrew the locking tab from the hood and place it in the lock, that will allow you to use it as you like.

Thanks Agel Tech,
But I want the interlocks working and to understand how they actually work too, so I could do with understanding which pins on the header will allow me to identify the hood open condition and if the hardware will also prevent the spindle from running if the hood is up :-)

cheers

Been busy making stuff lately and forgot to come back to complete this thread, I bought a bespoke 3D printer so the Novamill is a mill again.

Here is an image of the final conversion.

The controller is a USB CNC clone, the Red daughter boards are 4 channel opto-couplers sourced from china via ebay,

They are all mounted on a 3d printed backboard that holds the 96 way connector. Almost everything goes via the header, and the safety interlocks are all present including a feed back to the card to pause the programme due to an E-stop which is achieved via the relay daughter board (bottom left).

The spindle speed control is achieved via a servo driving a POT to get the 0-10v with a 3d printed mount. This is because whilst the sprint control card used a 0-10v signal it floats at about 180v above the control ground and I couldn't figure out how to easily isolate it (after I blew the analogue signal on the control card so had to use the servo PPM output).
