Micromill 2000 - material slips when cutting

Post by Benny » Thu 27 Sep , 2007 13:15 pm

My Micromill is running well except our pieces of Plexiglass keeps moving on the last line of the design. We are using 3 pieces of double sided tape to hold the piece down (not so well). We are not taking off the protective film until the drilling is over. Any thoughts on how to keep it from moving?

If you have a fixture, some type of vise, clamp, platen, something to hold the plexiglass to the machine table with a piece of wood under the piece to protect the table, you can try this …

Slide the clamp side of the Platen (right hand side) closer to the “L” bracket. Set the brass hex clamps so that they are at their most retracted position. Use a piece of ¼” plexiglass as a spacer under a piece you are going to cut, use double sided tape to keep it in place on the machine table. Place a piece of plexiglass on top of the spacer piece (project piece). Slide the clamp side of the Platen up to the piece that will be cut and tighten it to the machine table. Use the hex clamps to lock the top piece of plexiglass in place. Hold the top piece down so it is flat on the spacer piece when tightening the hex clamps.
As long as you did not move the “L” bracket your X & Y offsets will be the same. You will need to reset the Z offset to the top surface of the TOP piece of plexiglass, the project piece. If you do not have enough Z travel to cut the piece, disconnect from the machine and click on the Setup tab. Click on Setup Machine Parameters (password denny) and select Machine Capabilities and increase Travel Z- ( you may have -167, try -175, it’s in millimeters, be careful how much you add, you don’t want the cutting bit to hit the table).
