Micromill 2000 will not start up

Post by boots » Thu 13 Sep , 2007 20:04 pm

Micromill 2000
Oct. 2004
When I Turn the key on the fan starts but the machine does not, the light does not come on either. I launched the mill program and it says the machine is not turned on either. The E-Stop is not pushed in.

Several things to look at,
• Check/replace the fuses. Also check/replace the fuse (6.3 amp) on the control card.
• Is the LED status display on the control card lit, what color is it and what is on the display?
• Check the 3 transistors mounted to the heat sink on the right side of the control card, are there any cracks /holes or do they smoke when the power is turned on?
• Check the E-Stop switch for a loose or broken wire and check the contacts on the switch for continuity (the contacts are normally closed, NC).
• Check all the wire connections on the control card and other components.
• If your machine has a Push Button Off Switch, check it for a loose or broken wire and check the contacts on the switch for continuity (the contacts are normally closed, NC).
• Make sure the relays are fully seated in their sockets. Check that all wiring connectors are fully seated in their sockets.
• If there is no power to the control card, when you try to connect to the machine you will get a RS-232 error.
• If the machine is connected when you try to home the machine and the Z does not move but the numbers next to Z in the control panel change, the drive circuit is not powered on the control card. On newer machines the key has to be turned after the E-Stop is released to energize the drive circuit on the control card.
• If the machine homes and you cannot jog the axis, click on the slider bar for feed rate in the control panel and drag up. If you have Feed and Speed Override knobs on the front panel make sure they are turned to the right. Check the wire connections to these.

The machine blows the fuse right when it is replaced and turned on --- sounds like there is a dead short somewhere in the wiring.

Does the light in the machine cabinet turn on? yes
Does the cooling fan run? yes
Is the led status display on the control card lit? no
Are there any cracks or holes in the control card? no /no

The fuse F4 is in on the gray flip-up fuse holder. The F4 fuse is for the 24v transformer. The transformer may have an internal short or there is a short in the wiring to the control card. You will need to take readings with a multi-meter across the transformers secondary coils(s) and the wiring for anything that is dead shorted or grounded out. Finding a fault in the wiring could take a few hours.

Unplug the power connector on the control card, it is Connector TB11, it's on the lower right hand side of the control card, it has 5 wires and the center wire is green (or yellow/green). Replace the F4 fuse (6.3amp, Radio Shack part #270-1068 will work) and turn on the machine. If the fuse blows, then the transformer is the problem. If the fuse stays, then the control card is the problem.

The control card must be the problem, on the card the middle transistor on the heatsink has what appears to be a small hole or crack also. What do I do now, and how much do you think it will cost.

The Transistor, with the hole in it, and the electronics for it are gone. They drive one of the axis stepper motors. You will need to contact your ed reseller for a quote on a new control card for your machine.
